Get up to Speed event inspires the next generation

The Magma Centre is a former huge steel works near Rotherham part-converted to an exhibition space and museum dedicated to showcasing engineering and technology. It still allows visitors to see part of the steel making process on site.

Get up to Speed with STEM is a chance to see some of the UK's most exciting science, technology & engineering inventions, and meet the people who design, build and operate them! It enables people to speak to businesses, inventors, apprentices and education providers on the future of these industries, at this showcase event which is all free of charge!

The Vulcan to the Sky display stand had lots of information on aviation and showcased our plans for inspiring youngsters in STEM subjects with the new Heritage Hangar. Our ever-popular flight simulator was a major draw.

Held at the Magna Science Centre in Rotherham last Wednesday, it was attended by over 3,000 schoolchildren, teachers and parents from across the South Yorkshire region and beyond. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust team were there with volunteers explaining to visitors the latest plans for the new Heritage Hangar, explaining how we can use the unique story of XH558’s development in the Cold War to demonstrate engineering design skills.

Discussing aircraft ranging from paper-planes, small radio-controlled models, through to piston-engine designs and the various aerodynamic solutions that had to solved as aircraft propulsion moved from early-generation jet-turbine engines, through to those capable of sustaining supersonic flight in aircraft like Concorde. Many of the youngsters were fascinated with our story-boards and in talking with the team. The Vulcan flight simulator, was, as always a major draw, with many ages trying to make a controlled landing with the restricted vision the aircraft is famous for.

Our team will be attending more events like this over the coming months, so do look out for further news in a forthcoming email newsletter.
