RAF Henlow Families Day

by Ian Homer. Posted to category: General

26th July 2018

Out in the Bedfordshire countryside lies a small RAF base called RAF Henlow. In the original list of RAF Stations for April 1918, Henlow counts among only four other stations which remain open as RAF stations today: Halton, Northolt, Waddington and Wittering.

With varied activities undertaken over the past 100 years RAF Henlow now plays an important role within the support services of the RAF. From being the Centre of Aviation Medicine, Specialist and Security Police Wing, Digital Forensics Flight, Joint Arms Control Implementation Group, and Provost Marshal’s Dog Inspectorate. It is also home to the RAF Signals Museum. RAF Henlow is due to close in 2020.

We were invited by the station to attend the 2018 Families Day, and so, yesterday, with soaring temperatures a small team set up shop as part of our action in the community activities.

With base personnel from both RAF Henlow and RAF Chicksands and local schools this was most certainly a Families Day. With piped Bands, Arena displays from the Police Handlers, passenger flights in vintage aircraft, zorbs, bouncy castles, and a Segway racetrack there was plenty to keep young and old occupied through the afternoon.

We had a steady stream of visitors to the stand and with the raffle in full swing were able to answer questions from a wide range of air force personnel. It is clear that XH558 was a huge favourite across many branches of the service and many there also have fond memories of the Canberra.

So after a hot day it was time to head off home …………………………. Till the next time.
