Stunning Bluebird images

by Ian Homer. Posted to category: General

from testing on Loch Fad

Restored Bluebird completes test runs on Loch Fad on the Isle of Bute.

Regular video and photographic contributor, Neil Draper, was on hand to witness the testing runs of the fully restored Bluebird craft of the late Donald Campbell, as she entered the water again for the first time in over 51 years.

All went exceedingly well, and is due to the great work of Bill Smith, whose tenacity not only recovered the wreckage in 2001, but through his restoration, has led to a whole new generation becoming aware of the man, his machine and of the wider family achievements.

This is a photo-record of the recent testing runs on Loch Fad on the Isle of Bute, which has deservidly received so much national press and TV coverage in the last week. We hope you enjoy the images, some of which have been converted to black and white to give a historic feel, replicating the footage of the original runs on Coniston Water.

At the bottom of the article, you will find that plans for the future of Bluebird are still developing, with the possibility of a tour to various countries being mooted as an option  before she returns home.

We also feature a specially commissioned 'Limited Edition' coin that commemorates the man and his machine - produced on the 50th anniversary of the World Water Speed record attempt in 1967.

It's not 'wrong' or upside down - it's back to front - see our newsletter next week that will explain why this Union Flag is the way it is ......

The Union Flags painted on the rear fin are the originals, kept intact during the restoration.

Above: Bill Smith whose dedication and hard work made it all possible with our photo-journalist, Neil Draper.

Our thanks to Neil for spending the time in covering this event and in providing such wonderful images.
