Yes, it was right next door, selling lots of Vulcan, XH558, merchandise. They justified it to me by saying that they give 50% of their sales to the trust, which is great really, but it would be nice if they left it to the trust so we'd get 100%. One of the blokes brought the RIAT programme magazine in to show me that last year they gave the trust £3,000, which was 50% of what they had taken.
They were selling Vulcan umbrellas as well, which we don't have. Made a killing both Saturday and Sunday mornings as it was chucking it down both days. Have to admit though, I didn't like the umbrella design, I'd rather have it in black with the VTTS logo, the one they were selling was a print of XH558 flying with a blue sky background.

Ian said that the problem is, as any marketeer will know, buying them in at a price that we can put a reasonable markup on. RIAT tent was selling them at £17.50, I would pay up to £25.00 for a Black Logo'd one but I don't think many people would pay much more.

Ahh, but this way they can get 50% of their sales based on 558's success.

Shows how tastes vary, I wouldn't use a black and gold umbrella if you gave me one - but I love my 'Up and Away' one to bits. I have 3 of them.
Still think its mean to position themselves right next door.

Agree Mayfly - it was so blatently obvious. The VV was very much out "in the sticks" (but beside 558) and then there's one tent RIGHT next to it!

I got my 558 umbrella from SP at Dunsfold a few years ago. Love it, dunno where they were originally from, but if we could get some more made, I'm sure we'd sell tons. Especially at shows like Bournemouth last year. The were £15 when I got mine.... If RIAT are still trying to con people into thinking their stand is the VV maybe it's time to rethink attending? I've no doubt a healthy amount was taken by the real thing, but having a stand set up two yearts in a row right alongside with the sole purpose of effectively skimming 50% of potential sales revenue is pretty poor form in my book!

Tried that, tent was too wet to ignite!

Just to clarify a few things here:

The FREE Raffle was to entice people into the Vulcan Village because of a suspected poor position and distance from the main activity areas. (that later proved to be the correct assumption).

The RAFCTE agreement gives us 25% of their GROSS MARGIN on everything VULCAN RELATED they sell. Last year, that amounted (as they say on Page 9 of the 2011 programme) to £3,000. This agreement benefits us from their Web sales too.

Hence, let's assume they sell an item for £10 and make £4 profit - we would see £1

As to the pitch next door, as organisers, they are free to do that and let the public decide where to best spend their money.
They have a whole different product range anyway.

Regards,
Ian
