Hi Gully, a QSL card is something like a postcard which we send to amateur radio stations all over the world to confirm that they have made contact with The Special Event Radio Station. On the front of the card there will be a photograph of XH558 flying over Highclere Castle and on the back will be information on the aircraft. There will be also information in how to join the VTTSC and also gives the club's web- site address.
I hope that makes things a bit clearer!

We are now officially going to be operating GB60VUL in the month of May.This has taken months to organise and we have the first free publicity to go world-wide through our Amateur Radio magazine Rad Com. Please read the following from Norman Bland who is the radio station organiser.

GB60VUL – The Vulcan Diamond Jubilee
Some of you may have been aware that over the last few years GB0VUL has been used by various members of the Newbury And District Amateur Radio Society (NADARS) to promote XH558 the last flying Vulcan bomber, this year we are arranging the call GB60VUL, this is to promote 60 years of the Vulcan Bomber, and the Vulcan’s “Salute to Her Majesty” during her Diamond Jubilee year, for more information goto http://www.vulcansalute.org the call will be active from 6 different QTH’s from the 30th April to the 27th May.
These include Robin Hood Airport Doncaster, The Control Tower at Greenham Common, and the 211 Squadron ATC in Newbury.
We would like to thank everyone who has been involved previously and those being involved this year, but special thanks go to members of Newbury and District Amateur Radio Society (NADARS), Newbury ATC, Finningley Amateur Radio Society (FARS), Robin Hood Airport Doncaster, The Vulcan to the Sky Trust and Club, and also to West Berkshire District Council, who have all contributed in some way to making this extra special event possible.
Please listen out for us on air, we will only be active when time permits, round our normal daily commitments, but we will try to work as many stations as we can.

I have to confess I'm still completely confused by what all this is exactly. What is being broadcast, and to whom? Is it peer to peer or and can anyone with a radio listen in?
I'm masking my indifference with a veneer of detachment

If you are on air on Sunday 13th May (National Mills Day) try getting - GB2WBM - West Blatchington Windmill. Also on 22nd July. But it's not me - wouldn't have a clue!

I would like to explain to you what the Special Event radio Station is and how it operates. It is done through the wonders of Amateur Radio.
Radio Amateurs have to sit an exam to allow them to use transmitting equipment to enable them to talk to people within the UK and all over the world. There are millions of such people and they make this as their hobby as well as a profession.
When we contact somebody it is customary to send a QSL card to confirm that communication was made on a certain frequency and date. The card can have a photograph on the front and the station equipment and operating conditions on the back. On special occasions Ofcom (Government Body) will allow us to run Special Event Radio Stations.
This year we are going to be operating GB60VUL from various parts of the country. When we make contact with other “hams” in the UK and abroad they will get a QSL card (shown further up on this post) and ALL the information of the VTTSC will be given to them. It is the most efficient way of getting the world to know about our “Delta Lady XH558”
So what we are effectively doing is giving massive publicity for XH558 for free!!
I hope that you might have a better understanding on what’s going on.
