Title: Volunteer Vulcan polishers wanted
Post by: Sad Sam on April 28, 2011, 11:26:18 AM
There is a chance that we will need some volunteer Vulcan cleaners for the week commencing the 23rd of May, probably the Wednesday to the Friday (25th to the 27th)

When 558 left Lyneham she was nice and shiny and clean but by then having put a few more miles and hours under her belt she will be in need of a quick wash and brush up before her first static display of the year.

We are hoping that she will be inside at Doncaster so that we can give some of the grubby bits the punters notice (the wheels, around the drains, behind the AAPP exhaust, etc.)  A bit of a wipe down and a polish so that she looks her best.

There may be a chance that the work may have to be carried out on the apron so any one who would like to come up to help will need to be in possession of either a two part driving licence or an up to date passport.

We will need about six willing helpers, the cleaning is all on the underside (no need to bring Knee pads) and we have three days so it should not be too stressful.

There will be access to the supply of Jaffa cakes and Tea and coffee will be supplied (we also know a very good little Cafe in the hangar where they do a great cooked dinner for under a fiver!)

If you would like to help out drop me a line (either PM or e-mail  sevans@vulcantothesky.org)

Please could you volunteer and I will confirm that this will be happening the week before the 23rd.

And replied to.

Looks like I'll have to start a list.

Nice to see so many people who want to help out.

I'll be in touch with those who have volunteered a bit nearer the time once we know the scheme can go ahead.

I'd love to volunteer for a go at this, but taking leave that week is a problem.  If you need an extra helper for a day then let me know and I'll see if can get a day towards the end of the week off :)

Would love too, but as you moved her from just down the road to bloody miles away it's a bit difficult (the caff sounds very reasonable though...I could be persuaded!)

Well not withstanding the fact that 558 is now miles away from Lyneham, the goalposts have now moved and I need a hand this week the put a bit of a shine on 558 so she can impress some new friends.

I have been in touch with the folk who volunteered when this was first posted and have had a fair few pressed men (oops I meant volunteers)

I could do with a hand on Thursday if anyone is free (only Jangor coming at the moment, and I'm worried about the potential Jaffa cake consumption level).

Same drill as before a pm or an e-mail.

you will need either a valid passport or a 2 part diving licence to get into the hangar.

Thanks for listening.

If Gordon hadn't been taking so many photos - we'd have finished that cleaning yesterday!     ;)

...and of for anyone that says we missed a bit...  :D

Seriously, I had a great time yesterday.  It was great meet you all and to put some faces to names, spend time with some of the engineers, to see the dedication that both they and we all put into her.  And to get up close and personal to XH558 (although Mouse seemed to be getting a bit to friendly with her trying to put the wheels back on...   )

Sorry I couldn't be back again today to help guys.

Regards,

Mike

We found the bits that you missed today and duly polished them until Dr P could see his face in the reflection, had a great time (despite Gordon and his jokes),lovely to meet the engineers and the very friendly staff at the hangar and what a hangar it is,all gleaming and shiny so it is only right and proper that 558 should match her surroundings and she does after a bit of spit and polish!
Let's hope that the funding is found to keep her flying and at Donny.
Thank's to Sad Sam for the opportunity that he has given us.

Well I had a BRILLIANT day - the best day I've had so far this year!  :D

558 looks fantastic and the hanger and facilities are just awesome.
There wasn't much polishing left to do but we did find a few (small!) bits which had been missed so my neck and arms aren't aching as much as I expected this morning.

I just want to say thanks to Gordon for the lift (and the list of job websites), Mike for my dinner and all the team for being sooooooooo friendly and informative.

And special thanks to Sam for the chats and opportunities he gave me - I'm still grinning and couldn't get to sleep last night!!!

Hi Sam and fellow "VTTSC polishers club" members!

I can only echo the comments above. It feels very right that my first post is a huge "Thank You!" to everyone at hangar 3 and the other club members for the warm welcome and brilliant time I had at Finningley (It will always be that name for me).

It was a fantastic education in all things Vulcan shaped. The knowledge, passion and care the engineering team have for 558 is amazing. She really is in the best of hands. Just being up a ladder with a rag and squeezy bottle of white spirit to give her a clean was very humbling for me. Being dispatched with an oil can for hinges and microswitches? Well lets just say the silly grin of the bloke in red in Sam's photo is still here on Sunday. And don't get me started on what it's like to be in on a Maxaret change...(thanks Mouse). Maxaret? - page 148 of the Haynes manual for those of you not up to speed on Vulcan braking systems... ;)  And the manual is for sale through a certain splendid website...

Finally, a big thumbs up to the folks who cleaned the bomb doors and polished her topside. All the photos show the hard work. But as a fellow polisher I appreciate its only when you stand next to 558 you really see how big she is to clean!

It all seemed to go very well, I say seemed to go well as I was not there for most of it as I was taking a delivery on another part of the airfield.  The people I spoke to at the end were all very impressed and are all very happy to have a Vulcan back in their midst.

Hello Everybody,

It looks as if 558 has is off on her holidays again so I wondered if there were any more volunteers to come and give her a wash and brush up?

Despite the fact she has only flown twice since the last session she is allready looking a bit grubby!

I am also looking for about four reasonably fit people to help us open the doors on Friday.  The reason for this is that we seem to have got really old and so have the doors, despite my assurances that the doors will get easier to move once we use them a bit it's not happening.  So we thought we would go for plan B (many hands make light work)  As a bonus if we are launching from stand 16 there should be a chance to see/help with the preperation and launch for the Isle of Man flight (I have to talk to Taff about that though)

Usual form, e-mail or pm to me with a contact number.  Cleaning will probably be Wednesday/Thursday with moving the jet on Friday.

Yet more fantastic work by the polishers this week.

Loads of help not only with getting 558 sparkly clean for Kemble next week but also helping to sort out the library and some solutions to our ongoing storage problems.

Long day for the boys today but I hope they got something out of this evenings entertainment.

I'm pretty sure there are some great photos out there now.  Feel free to post them, either on here or in the photo sectoion.

Once more thank you Philip, Neil and Andy very much for your hard work.  I cant say we would not have done it with out you, but if we had it would have been a lot harder (and 558 would not have looked so good!)

Hello everyone once again from what I will refer to as the second unofficial edition of “TVPC” – The Vulcan Polishing Club.

I know lots of people were disappointed at not being able to get to Finningley this time so I thought I’d give you a run through from my two days there. Here is Wednesday...

First and foremost a huge thanks (yet again) to Sam for his willingness to take us on board and his ability to focus our enthusiasm into something remotely productive. It must have felt like trying to herd cats at various points over the three days – it’s a fine line sometimes between trying to be helpful and simply getting in the way or even worse just generating more work… (more on that later).

The hangar now has a Portacabin to house the real version of the Haynes Vulcan Owners’ Manual. It’s a whole wall of Vulcan technical and engineering manuals, guides and maintenance volumes. Lots of them. Lew (who has been generating those excellent signed prints to raise more cash) helped us move the boxes which started at “heavy” passing through “you must be joking” to “I’m quite happy here” ones generating their own gravity field. Once in the cabin Neil and myself started unpacking. What followed was something I’m sure was part of a “volunteers grading and evaluation test” put together by Sam. He says “Match the codes on the spines to the codes on the shelves – that’s where that volume lives…” Simples! True. After only two or three stabs we pretty much had it licked…

Seriously though the volumes are amazing. Page after page of Vulcan history just leaps from each one. Some are in large ring binders, others still in their original leather hard backs. Some marked “Classified”, some signed off by long retired high ranking types from the RAF. Pure Vulcan DNA in printed and written form. Fascinating. Priceless. Irreplaceable. Without it she simply cannot fly.

Neil gets this week’s gold star for rallying to the call and turning up on all three days. He did a cracking job Wednesday cleaning the wing section downwind from the Rover exhaust outlet . I know it’s quite a job because I did it last time! While he got stuck into that I had a go at the wheels, inside and outside of the undercarriage doors and the legs. So whilst 3 hangars’ own “Kim and Aggie“ were making her presentable (On this weeks’ edition of “How Clean Is Your Vulcan?” we show how white spirit and a rag is king) Sam topped up the tyres and on board high pressure bottles with nitrogen from one of the ground trolleys.
On his rounds Sam also replaced the protective grease from the bare metal sections of the legs. These bare sections are where the test equipment scans the legs for internal cracks and damage. They need to be bare metal because scans through paint don’t work. However, the down side is the bare metal corrodes horribly quickly if not protected by the grease. The last of which I had dutifully removed in my hasty pursuit of a smooth clean set of legs… Oops…

After lunch Neil and myself each cleaned two of the lower engine and jet pipe fairings. These need plenty of attention as they naturally become oily and dirty during use. Halfway down the length of the first I realised it was best to place the ladder between them and clean BOTH the above sections otherwise I’d be dragging the ladder all the way back to clean the second…nupty! Whilst we were sorting these the real engineers and technicians were busy fitting new “EADS” vinyl transfers to the insides of the main gear doors. I kid you not - measured and aligned to the nearest rivet and very carefully applied by Mr Brown. The afternoon also saw a visit from the RHA Fire Officers – all decked out in their branded hi-vis bibs and jackets. I think their “inspection” blended into another mini guided ground tour. Plenty of faces were all goggle eyed at being up close to 558. Seems officialdom is not immune to “The Vulcan Effect” either!

Probably the week after next, before she goes to Waddington on the Thursday.

I would think some willing hands to lean on the doors will be appreciated as well but I'll have to check with Taff who has the pl in his head at the moment  ;)

Yes it would. It's so that "Directions" (the company running the site) can issue you a nice orange pass that gets you airside - which includes hangar 3 where our triangular tin lovely thing waits to be buffed 'n polished.

Ha Ha - If I had some they'd probably be worth a lot more than £5 now!

Consider this, I haven't had a need to change the old driving license as I haven't moved house in the last 12 years, or changed my name or had any points on my license :) (touch wood), so perhaps its something I should be proud of :D

Nope, we tried some chain lube but it had no effect whatsoever  :(

Just have to admit that thirty years ago three of us could move theses doors.  In the intervening period they have obviously got heavier (as have we)

My idea is (as the only hangar rat on the team) the more we use the doors the easier it will get.  time is running out for my idea to work  :o

In the meantime only one thing will shift the doors (loads of of grunt!)

Sorry but still no pl for next week.  Taff and John are in a meeting in Hinckley tomorrow, my pl is to call in there on my way home and form a pl for next week from there.

Just a thought, but a guy I know who leads a local Air Cadet unit told me story a year or two ago about an event that the unit was involved with and  a set of hanger doors that took brute force to shift.  No amount of lubrication seemed to have any affect.  In the end he got the cadets to dig out the accumulated dirt from around the rails that the bottom door wheels ran along.  Turns out that the dirt had built up to such a level that the wheels were grounding rather than running smoothly along the rail surface.  Could be this be a factor in hanger 3's doors?

Hi Neil,
Yes, my turn on the Dog (Rover) exhaust. Think it's almost as clean as your last efforts... Sure there will be plenty to clean next time though - she's away for quite a stint this time.

Wow, what a fantastic day!  I really enjoyed myself.  A great big thanks to all the engineering staff for letting me loose on XH558, it was great meeting you all.  And I watched as the summer plaque was installed by 3M

But best of all Phil and I helped prepare and move the aircraft from 3 hanger to pan 16 at DSA ready for the flight to Waddington tomorrow.  You can even hear how squeaky clean the wheels are!!

Special thanks to Sam for organising the pl :D  :D  :D

Oh, and a BBC Look North (Leeds) cameraman was there getting some great shots.  There may be a clip of me doing some polishing!  They expect the piece to be aired on Monday

Takes longer to download and convert the HD video from the camcorder and then upload it to YouTube whereas with the Galaxy S2 I can upload direct to YouTube as soon as I get into a WiFi hotspot, so its easier.

Many thanks once again to Sam for letting the "Polishing Club" loose on 558 after her recent trip away. Hopefully Nicola's, Ian's and my efforts will have her looking good in the sun at Waddo! Learning more and more about our favorite tin triangle on each visit - I even managed to leave the grease on the legs this time so I'm getting better... Though I still have not figured out how 3 hangars doors need pushing up hill in BOTH directions   It's a clever trick... Wednesday saw the installation of the summer plaque - looks very nice and thanks are due to Avro for providing their trademark huge bombay in which to work! Lots of other little jobs were been done on the aircraft by the real ground crew over the two days. Believe me, the engineers and technicians and the rest of the ground crew are working very hard behind the scenes to ensure 558 is fully fit for her display season. Spare a thought for them next time you hear the howl...

We are having a couple of days off to get over the last month and then we'll be back in on Thursday any one who fancies coming over to give us a hand should let me know in the usual manner.

Probably looking for a bit of cleaning on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning with a bit of door opening action in the afternoon.

Well 558 is back in her home and looking forward to a bit of a rest.

she does look a bit grubby, as you would expect after spraying a few gallons of hydraulic fluid all over the front undercarriage bay!

Sadly she will have to stay grubby for a week or so as I am away doing a bit of polishing myself.

Once I am back I would appreciate a bit of hand to give her a bit of a wash and brush up before the first visitors turn up to look around the new "visitor experience" and education centre.

Hello there,

Only me again.  Seeing as how 558 was out playing again at the weekend we would like to give her a bit of a polish before the members day.

Due to new restrictions on access could people let me know names and address via e-mail.

Plan is to clean the jet Weds and Thursday and there will probably be some hangar sorting Friday.

Already have two of the usual suspects but if anyone else fancies coming along could you let me have the details before this Thursday evening.

I can't this time Sam due to work commitments.  But we've just got back from our Vulcan Tour at DSA.  Everyone of us enjoyed the experience, it was really well organised.  Thanks must go to the guys in the Vulcan Experience Centre,  Katie who met us there and got us onto the bus, the lady in the hanger reception who presented the kids with special bags of sweets and play things, Toni who gave the initial talk and Nicola for the fascinating talk on everything Vulcan.  Well done all.  My son Michael also really enjoyed flying the Vulcan on the PC Flight Simulator with instructions from Katie's son, and Rachael loved the colouring in sets that were available next to XH558.  A really good time was had by all.   :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

It's that time of the year again, we are coming to the end of the winter service and 558 is in need of a good wash and brush up.

If you have any availability over the next few weeks we would be more than pleased to see you up at Doncaster.

A bit of a wipe down and a polish so that she looks her best, plus the chance to help out our painter who has come in to make sure she looks her best in a very important year.

The hangar at Doncaster is considered to be airside so any one who would like to come up to help will need to be in possession of either a two part driving licence or an up to date passport.

We will need about six willing helpers and we have a couple of weeks so it should not be too stressful.

Come along and have the opportunity to say "I did that!" (with apology's to a well known DIY store ;) )

Bump.........

We are getting close to putting 558 back in the air and she could do with a bit of a wash and brush up.

We also need some help to remove all the stickers from the bomb bay doors so that they can be replaced with a new set - all the names will still be there bet the new stickers will be a bit more uniform.

Anyone who fancies a day either polishing or peeling stickers is welcome.  Usual criteria about photo id (as you will be working "airside") and clothing that you be or may not mind getting a bit scruffy.

Let me know by e-mail or pm if you want to come and play.

I have deliberately kept this vague so that people can fit in with other commitments.

Let me know when you are available and we'll see if we can find something for you to do.

Plan is to fly at the end of April (assuming we get the money) so it would be nice if she was clean by then.

Easter is in there somewhere - it's the only bank holiday we get every year so I don't think we'll be about from the Thursday evening until the Tuesday morning.

The plan is to fit the new stickers on around about the 4th & 5th April so if we can get some help before then that would be great.

After that we have a couple of days outside engine running at some point but as I say if you are available let me know.

Hi Sam, if you get short on volunteers to remove the decals then I might be able to come up and give you some assistance. The best way to remove them is with a hot-air gun and they will just peel off. I will also be up later to put the new decals on the bomb-bay doors as well.

Send me a personal message with your name and when you would like to come.

I have been taking some pictures of you all as you graft away.  They will all get sent over to Mark, hopefully be included in things like the magazine and the calender.

Thank you all very much - I have to say the jet has never looked as good as she does at the moment.

Fonseca has been up here on a solo polishing mission this week and has done a great job - the only thing is the bits he has done now look so good we need more volunteers to do the rest of the underside!

Any time someone feels the need to come and get a very close look at a Vulcan feel free to drop me a line.

Yes - don't be shy. Help make 558 shiny!
As you can read from earlier in the thread others have pitched up and done some fantastic work. Come along and do a panel or two or do more if you wish. It's not difficult and it's a unique opportunity to see her REALLY close up. And now is as good a time as any before the display season starts. Just think, in the middle of a 'Rumen's Special' you can look up and point and say "look - that bit glinting there. I did that!". It's bound to impress friends and family and draw gasps of admiration from the crowd around you... Ok maybe not but I guarantee you'll feel thumpingly proud.  :D

If you get chance to go polishing then - GO! Everyone will make you so welcome and you are actually allowed to get your hands on 558!
And you'll be grinning for days after.................................... :D  :D  :D
Don't think I dare ask for any more time off at the mo   :?

Might just drop a few hints to the boss though.....................................

She's beginning to positively glow.

Sam

I've just been thinking - that bit under her chin and round the door that still needs to be done. Why not leave it til she's outside and give it a really good scrub with that bug shifter stuff and it can be rinsed off easier than in the hangar. Just let us know when she's outside next ........
I'm sure there'll be plenty of volunteers.

Just sat in the office looking out at the worlds most shiny Vulcan  :D  :D

I always think that as it costs about £2,000,000 a year to run her it would be nice if she looked like a couple of million dollars.

I must say that thanks to many willing volunteers she realy does look the part and when she turns up at Waddington tomorrow afternoon you can all be very proud of your Vulcan, as I am.

I would like to thank (in no particular order) Johnjosh43, Wildcard, Billybear, Jakspeed, Freedom2006, StAthanlecky, Fonseca, Jigsaw, Dee, Seanbennet, Gerald, Johnywohny, Northern Monkey, Gm8jip who have all been up to the hangar in the last couple of months to lend a hand.

I hope you have all enjoyed yourselves as much as you seem to have done and I'd like to let you know your efforts have been appreciated by the engineering team (as it means that is one less thing for us to do)

I'm sure I must have left some people off the list and if I have I am very sorry, so many people have volunteered to come up here it is hard to keep track of them all!

Once again thank you all very much and I hope you all get some great pictures of your handy work over the next few weekends.

Bump...

558 is in the hangar and though she looks great @ a couple of hundred feet during the display when you get in close you can see the cull she has made on the UK fly population this year.

As you will know from the news letter we are not starting the winter service yet until we get the rest of the necessary funding.  However I am up here in Doncaster to supervise anyone who would like to come up and make sure she looks her best for the many groups of people coming into the hangar for tours.

Usual stuff applies.  Photo id needed to gain access to the hangar.  Bring old clothes (or @ least something that you don't mind getting dirty.

PM me with your availability (Tuesdays to Thursdays are best)

Access to Jaffa cakes, Coffee and Tea  ;D

Hi all.

It's coming up to that time of year again.

Dee and Jacqui have already been in and cleaned the mess behind the dog  ??? Hmm - could have put that better (though it does mean the bit that most would agree is "the worst bit" is done.

Lots of bugs on the leading edges (well the bits which have not been covered with two sheets of very expensive aluminium)

The nose is nice and clean as well thanks to Johnjosh  ;D

If you fancy a day or two getting very up close and personal with 558 drop me a line via the pm feature on the forum.

Usual deal with access to our supply of Jaffa cakes and coffee.

See you soon.

Any time you want to come over just let me know!

Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays are best at the moment.

We have the Cherry picker for a couple of weeks so if anyone fancies has a good head for heights I want to get some "Airglide" treatment on the fin.

Top of the wings also needs a good wash so that will keep a couple of people busy for a few days.

Yep managed to survive.

Thank you to Jacqui and Dee for putting in the time and effort today.

We now have a 50% clean and shiny Vulcan.

Tomorrow we have Andy (Cookie monster) and hopefully Jigsaw coming in so I hope to get the other wing to match.

Then we will come down off jacks and we'll crack on with the cockpit and fin.

I've got some nice high tech "Airglide" polish to put on the leading edges of the fin and the wings to help keep 558 looking good for the summer.

Thanks again to all the folks who give up their time to support 558  ;D ;D ;D

We'll have to wait until she's back on the ground as the access is a bit limited at the moment.

By the time we're ready to go out side the top will need dusting again!   :(

Sam what needs doing to the nose ?
I  thought I'd done it all besides very top bit in front of windscreen that needed a cherry thingy. Looks like another day over there required.

Hi John,

You did a great job on the nose last year but all the stuff that has gone on since means that she is now very dusty.........

Another day should do it.

Also have the leading edge to do on the Port wing (though Cliff thinks it looks ok anyway)

Work's been getting in the way a bit already this week, but I can probably do part of Wednesday.  I might have to get away a bit earlier than usual, don't know yet.

Oh - I put the chocolate in the 'fridge with the remaining cakes. :)

What's the current state of play, Sam?

Will there be a chance to finish washing and polishing the nose before Cosford?

If two of us can make it I'd guess we could do it in a couple of days.

Cheers,

558 is outside now until she comes back from Yoevilton.

Sadly the restrictions placed on us by the airport mean that we can not have people out on the pan cleaning the jet.

Thanks for the offers of help.

Hi

There is nothing going on at the moment.

Due to some new legislation which has just come in before we can let you all loose on the jet with any thing as dangerous as a sponge we have to sort out some human factors training  ???

It will be nice for all the club members to see how dirty she is at the end of the season anyway so they can tell how much work is involved with keeping her looking so good.

Looking forward to seeing you all in the hangar on Saturday...

I'm afraid I've messed up a bit now with some new restrictions regarding access to the the jet/hangar.

Just like to say a huge thank you to all of the polishers who have come along over the years to basically do my job for me.

you have all been great and I hope you all think it was worth it.

Oh and those who were in the hangar on Thursday got a bit of a celebrity bonus so that was nice.

Thank YOU Sam for letting us near her!

I'm sure I can vouch for all the polishers (and the odd Scrubber........!!) that we have had a wonderful time in the hanger and it has been a absolute and utter priviledge.  ;)

Thanks again to you and the rest of the engineers for making us so welcome - it's been brilliant!!  ;D

Bump...

It's been a while.

She's looking a bit dusty and she never got a good clean after her last day out.

If anyone is still talking to me and they would like to come over to have a bit of fun drop me a p.m.

We'll probably keep it down to groups of four or five as while we now have good access all around the jet there are now some issues with controlling the punters (who have good access all around the jet....)

Scrubbers of the world untie.
