Title: New Newsletters launched!
Post by: Board Admin on September 03, 2010, 05:36:03 PM
New Newsletters will shortly be going out. The first, will be to all those who have signed the Birthday Card.

Early next week, regular updates will be sent out to all those for whom we hold email contact details.

Please ensure you accept http://www.vulcantothesky.org/register.html (http://www.vulcantothesky.org/register.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) as the databases will be refreshed every week to clean duplicates and add in new.

A copy of the first email newsletter can be seen here: http://www.vulcantothesky.org/newsletter (http://www.vulcantothesky.org/newsletter" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

We hope you like them and that you will look forward to regular updates delivered directly to you!

The Vulcan to the Sky Team

Minor comment on the newsletter.  "Next planned public display" listed as Coventry.  Splitting hairs, but how many people will think that it means just more than on general display to the public rather than a flying display as such?  Or will some nice kind pilot be doing a little more than taking off??

As it's only a fly in maybe a flypast or two but not a full display.

Regarding the newsletter, I like it. As something that is going out en masse it needs to look slick and professional and it does that nicely.

It projects the right image imo.

Yes - newsletter looks the business, no argument there.  Just wondering if 'appearance' would be slighty more appropriate than 'display'.  Absolutely no crticism otherwise... :-)

For some unknown reason we haven't had an e-mail newsletter even though we must be on the data base for all manner of reasons.....birthday card, donations, club members, volunteers etc.
So have just signed up again.........what a bally caper. I almost gave up and wonder just how many have given up trying.
First I had to use a password, why?
Then it refused my password, it said the password must be between 6 & 20 characters. My original was 6 but after trying four times I gave up and used a longer one.
Four times it said that I hadn't input the silly random characters correctly.
Eventually it seemed happy and finally agreed to register me.
Had I just been a casual observer, who are just the people we are trying to attract, I think I would have given up and gone away.
I might not be the sharpest knife in the block when it comes to puters put I would like to think that a simple registration is not beyond my capabilities.
Why does everything have to be so damned complicated.

Landyman.

As for Landyman, no Newsletter for me either. I re-registered yesterday just in case, but still not received anything. Whether there have been any recent E-mailed communications I don't know, but the last thing I received was "South Coast Washout" from Dr. Bob on 29th August  :?:

I've done some research and this is the situation.

When you register, the details you enter are stored in a database on this site.

However, the mail-house that sends out the emails works from their own, completely separate 'master' database (combining addresses from various sources - not just from here).

So, the newly entered details are periodically taken from the database here & handed on to the mail-house.  They will then validate & check for duplicates, etc.

Overall, this introduces a delay which in some cases has been in the order of weeks...

I'm now trying to think up an automated (technological) solution to this because the lag (sometimes weeks) between registration & starting to receive emails is not going to help the forthcoming campaigns one little bit.

Surely the most obvious would be to have 'our' own list server?

Have forwarded to as many as I can, including one contact at BBC Radio Glos who I did an interview with last year. Well, it can't hurt. Can it?

Just received my news letter looks very professional and does the biz

after reading"Landymans" problems registering, I'm very grateful that I did not have to re register as I would certainly have given up, not being an IT geek just a silver surfer, thinking of passwords is like trying to find the chemical equation for long life

Nearly 1500 viewings since it was first posted on YouTube late yesterday afternoon.

Here's hoping they all translate into nibbles at the £365k!
Title: Re: New Newsletters launched!
Post by: brains_mt on October 02, 2010, 11:02:31 AM
£365000 divided by 1500 is £243 per person.

The only reason Ive done that is to show how little a lot of people have to give to make a large amount. If it was 15000 it would only be £24 per person. Given that some give more and some give less, Im certain we can do this!!!!! :D

Some interesting statistics from the 2008/09 campaign:-
- the most common donation was £50 (£10, £20 & £100 also being prominent spikes)
- the average was £60
- the total number who pledged was around 9,000

Remember that Gift Aid adds (approx) 20% to the face value of each donation so that a donation of £50 is worth approx £60 to XH558.

No room for complacency, but I'm fairly positive about it all - certainly an improvement on 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006...  ;)

After all, we've contacted far more people this time around - and with a far better message (relatively small, short-term glitch in cashflow vs needing a very large proportion of our budget from the 'begging bowl').
Title: Re: New Newsletters launched!
Post by: eddief on October 02, 2010, 11:42:53 AM
And guess what..?

If we assume a typical level of Gift Aid (20%) then that £365k shrinks to £304k (Gift Aid provides the balance).

So realistically, we're looking at around £300k of donations (with Gift Aid) from approx 25,000 people.

That's £12 per head but (of course) only a small proportion will donate.

Using the known average of £60 per head from 2008/09, we'd need 5,000 donors from an initial 'population' of 25,000 which seems attainable to me?

Of course the 25,000 figure is only a subset of those who will learn of the appeal - we will also pick up more supporters over the coming weeks via national press, forwarding of emails, word of mouth, etc.

Looking quite feasible I would say.

I think it's already been asked elsewhere , but......
Is the "Totaliser" going to make an appearance for this Appeal ??
Title: Re: New Newsletters launched!
Post by: katie_t on October 02, 2010, 01:07:35 PM
I was contacted by someone in the local area this week whose request to redeem his pledge earlier in the year had got lost in the post.  Given that there were quite a few unredeemed pledges, are there plans to revisit them during October?  Surely a good number of these will, similarly, have been lost by 'good old Royal Mail' or ended up at the bottom of someone's intray and just forgotten about??

I'm sure this is already in hand  :)  and I'll pass on details of any more I come across to the Trust.

Sorry that this is off-topic (and may already have been covered somewhere  :? ).

Now up to 2,342 views of the YouTube video - not bad for just over 24 hours...

This is approximately 100 views per hour - or nearly two every minute since the video was first published.

I'd say that we are definitely 'reaching our audience'.

Time will tell if 'reaching' them equates to donations...

Spoke to friends at a village event last night. They had signed the Birthday card and were therefore on the new mailing list.
Just to show that the appeal is working I have copied their e-mail that they sent this morning:-

Just to let you know I have just opened the Vulcan news letter and we watched the video clip. Yes we spotted you! Very moving presentation. We will send a donation but only a drop in the ocean I'm afraid.
Hope you succeed!

Hope that this will be the typical reaction as lots of drops = ocean.  :)

Not sure the links are published on the site (might be a good idea to have them though, as long as it doesn't discourage people from signing up). The latest newsletter is here:-

PS - the link us at the top of the newsletter where it says 'Having trouble viewing the message?'.

This is the 4th newsletter that I have not had to my main email address.  I have got a copy of each, but by asking Mayfly if she would forward me a copy, which she has done.  I have sent an email to the enquiries email address at the bottom of the newsletter, so will see what is said from that.

It might be if you have sent on the email to someone who has then un-subscribed - it drops out the originator.
We changed the footer text  a few weeks back to ease the problem, but some do not read the right lines I'm afraid!!

I'll add your email back into the list just to be safe. Meantime, I fear Mayfly might be needed again!
