How about some of those download colour in pictures on Vulcan Ventures in a little book format

http://www.vulcanventures.co.uk/members/downloads.php

you have to login to see the downloads, im sure they would sell at the right price, and wouldnt cost that much to do either ( i would of thought)

I don't know if the idea of a delta stunt-kite has been done before but how about this with a "different design" (if you know what I mean?).

[attachment=0:3mewcnml]kite.jpg[/attachment:3mewcnml]

I'd buy one!

The bottom line is cost. we have a small window during the summer to move stock and a large hole when we are sat on it. There are companies who can sustain stock over the winter. We are not in that position, hence the fact that the merchandise team investigate all ideas, unfortunately not all are practical. Keep them coming please. Do n't forget your recycling stuff please btb.

I would point out , however , that's what the on-line Club Shop is for -- selling stock throughout the year , rather than just during the "display season" { after all , I thought the sales side of the VV was in addition to the Shop , not instead of it ! }
It would be more accurate to concider which items are likely to attain and exceed their "break-even point" , be that quickly or over the course of the year ....which would depend on such variables as initial unit purchase cost versus unit retail price.
After all , there's not much point in buying 1000 widgets at £1 each , but only being able able to sell 450 of them for £2 each.....as you'll have already worked out , the break-even point is 500 widgets sold , with any widget above that sold being clear profit { whether you sell the rest at £2 , or discount them to £1 }
Yes , there could be a problem with "special" runs , such as this year's "50th Anniversary" line or calendars, but run-of-the-mill { undated } items don't really have a shelf-life in that respect.
A way around the problem could be to use the same procedure as the Club does with it's T-shirts , namely ask who would be interested in purchasing a particular item.......if enough people express an interest : look into the procurement costs , report back on how much the item would retail for , then offer it as a pre-order item - on the understanding that unless the number of items pre-ordered exceeds the "break-even point" or any other minimum limit determined by the Club , the production order will not be placed { whether or not the Club insists that any pre-order of the item is "cash in advance" is another thing ! }

As you correctly state , some items are impractical due to the "low sales volume versus unit purchase cost" equation , but there may still be items which haven't been suggested yet which could prove to be very marketable.

My statement does say keep ideas coming. It's just that over the years we have had alot of ideas that require development prior to finished article that makes a  production run feasible or not. We do n't want to disappoint folks from putting forward ideas. Thats why Jane and the merchandising team DO take all suggestions seriously.
My pet idea is a direct  line from the Stella brewery to home with a % of bus/taxi fares saved going to the funds. Max that to enthusiasts around the country. After all they can do it with avgas........ :D  :D  :D  :D
Save me a walk home!!!!
Edited for grammatic reasons.

Now if it involves a "PLUTO" to their Leuven brewery , count me in { not a fan of the UK-brewed stuff }........or better still , their Liège { Jupille-sur-Meuse } brewery , to give the option of Stella or Jupiler !!

You have to remember the On-line store is owned and run by the Trust, using Club Volunteer help as possible.

To help, and to provide the choice, all Club lines are stocked in the store, but the Club do only have the Summer Season and any Christmas promotions by Mail Order or Xmas Markets, to generate their income. Any additional budget has to come from the surplus membership fees. It is a fine balance, because the aim is to make donations in support of XH558, whilst having sufficient money left to fund magazines and other Club expenses. Publishing books, with print runs of 4,000+ is not cheap and does take time to recoup investment.

All Vulcan Villages are stocked by the Trust, while the Club Stands are exactly that - Club supplied. One reason, why both sides work closely together on developing complimentary lines and ordering supplies in quantities that sell quickly!  We "intertrade" at wholesale prices so both sides carry one anothers' lines - giving maximum choice to you the buying public.

Hope that clarifies a bit more.....

Regards,
Ian.

I know what you mean re stock and the summer re the VV just trying to expand on one item ;)

Going back over old ground and the "Car Sun Shades" (Yes I know we have talked cost etc but......) if the sun shades were farely good material and good design, could they not be used in the winter as "Frost Shades" to keep your windscreen clear and yes NO scraping     Sales all year round and good Christmas Presents     Well its a idea

I know over the years of selling TVOC goodies on the stall, we need to ensure we have good range of items at low cost for kids. Parents, especially in these times, will not want too pay out for 'tat'. The cost, quality, profit margin balance is going to be even harder this year.

It's a great idea.... only a large proportion of our events are airshows....... and kites + airshows = disaster.

I know we can labour the point that it's not to be used on the day, but speaking as a parent, it's hard to buy something and then refuse it immediately, and there will always be one person who doesn't think.....

How about having a dedicated section on the new webshop specifically for items which have been flown on XH558? Just calendars & books etc, and only a limited number so as not to devalue them. I bagged a 'flown on 558' calendar at RIAT after a short impromptu auction, but only because I was in the right place at the right time.  This would give more people the same opportunity, and would make a few extra quid too.

You can sell them and the punter can collect them at the end of flying.

Win win.

Sale and safety.

Just a thought.

OR

Sell it at the show with delivery to an address.

Has there been any further progress on fold away chairs?

At Waddington there was a stand selling ones with I-pod speakers in the arms for £7 each or 3 for £15.

We could've bought a load from him, had our logo put on them then sold them on for £10 each.

Stamps/FDCs.  I've got loads of first day covers flown in Vulcans (including one autographed by Bruce Dickinson after he was at the controls of XL426 for a fast taxi run - if you don't know who he is, oh dear.... ;-) ).  Last day of this squadron, flown around the world in a Vulcan via Goose Bay and stuff.  The railway (Bluebell) I volunteer on often has stamp issues done, and carries them by rail.  Get a nice photo of 558 and turn it into a stamp, write a side of A4 about her RAF history and restoration and print an envelope with another nice pic on.  Stamp with a commemorative postmark at the venue, then post using a conventional stamp.

I'd be quite happy to have a word with the person who does these for the railway if someone thinks it might be a good idea....

We have looked at doing chairs several times.
Yes we could have done a deal on some, (say half price £3.50) had our logo put on (maybe £2 each) and then found some way of storing/travelling with a large quantity of chairs and we would be back to the reason why we havent done them!! We cant a) afford to do them at an economical price and b) we cant store/transport them in sufficient quantities to make them a viable item (they are bulky).
One suggestion is that we in some way sell something which you can use to customise your own chairs and we will think about this. :D

Something like an iron-on transfer { which has the advantage of being suitable for objects other than chairs } ??

Just been looking through the online store at the download section and I'm thinking we are missing out big time here. We have 1 mp3 file at £1 and 5 wallpaper downloads starting at £2 each. I know money from these downloads is basically money in the bank but who pays for wallpaper downloads these days?.
With broadband speeds as good as they are, should we not be offering something different on the download site. For example;
Members photo collections - Get members to submit high quality photos of 558 that they would be willing to be share online. Put say 100 of the best as a  collection.
Signed crew photo's.
Close up and personal photo's of the interior of 558.
Images of 558 that are suitable for T-Shirt printing.
Audio interview with Martin about his Black Buck missions and display flights( not all of us can attend the tour talks). Ditto for other display pilots and engineers etc.
colouring in pictures for kids.
Technical stuff such as flight logs and maintainance sheets.
Just a few ideas. I know it takes time and everyone is busy and focused on displays and the VV at the moment but perhaps someone outside of the frontline stuff could take on as a project? :D
Happy Days
Paul

Ian,
I totally understand where your coming from. I know everyone is putting in 110% and more to keep everything going but some of the things that could be put onto the download section could be done by other members of the club ( as a project ), not directly involved in promoting and keeping 558 in the public eye during the display season. If the club is under pressure to list new items or you need help, why not ask for some support, I'm sure that it would be forthcoming. I bet there are many members out there with the skills and time to help.

I picked up a nicely made mini wooden Jigsaw at one of the shows last year. Anyone who has seen it has wanted one. I have not seen them on the list of goods this year or at Farnborough, so if they are/will be available, I am sure there would be a few sales

I got the big wooden jigsaw recently, not many pieces but they are funny shapes (including lots of vulcan shapes) and, boy, is it hard! I think these are club stock, though, so it's one of those items where you need a club stand not VV.

On the download items what I would love would be an iPhone app and a ringtone (both under discussion / development?).

Apple groupie: "it does this, that and this and that blah blah blah:

not 1, but 3 ! I've got the quite/very rare 'Let it be' which was initially released with the book in the box set , think they are worth quite a bit nowadays. Also got Abbey Road and the White album but those aren't as rare - don't think I've sold them.

Now back on the subject of sales items, last week I made up some MP3s of vulcan howls for Ian and I then wondered if anybody has a recording of a ground to aircraft radio conversation clering the vulcan for take off, that would make a good ringtone! If anybody knows of one that i can convert to mp3 please let me know, thanks

Andy...Bet you have an Apple Beatles album!!! ;)  ;)  :D

not 1, but 3 !

If anybody knows of one that i can convert to mp3 please let me know, thanks

lastly re the chuck gliders - i'm sure we have those now - saw some on the stand at Lowestoft yesterday

There's two on ebay, one at £170 the other £270.

I believe Toni Hunter has a stash of them, Mike.  A few were auctioned off at the members' get together at Husbands Bosworth back in March. Since then, I've been the lucky owner of an inertia switch! Could be an idea to consider whether we could get more money for these bits, though.  All the big money had gone on some lovely pictures and the inertia switch only went for a few quid (which is how I could afford it ;) ).

There were thousands of these ponchos around and they were sold for £2.50 each. I spoke to the airshow boss, Paul Bayfield, about them and although the initial set up costs are fairly high they cost next to nothing to re-print for susequent orders.
With our usual summer weather they could be a very good money spinner.

Just for info, Lowestoft Air Show were selling these at £2.50 last week.  I saw a few people wearing them but not a huge number.  It was noted by committee members present.  As with all product suggestions, the Club can't do everything and have to select what they think will be most cost effective and profitable.  I personally think they'd go well, especially at our off season events like Lincoln Chrismas Market, but we wouldn't make that much on them.

Hi perhaps £2.50 is slightley too lower price it is an item with our weather as it is a twelve month seller...and i realise that it easy for me to suggest something and someone else has to make an informed  decsion on a stock   item..but if you do not have them in stock at the right time you do not make the profit that's retailing !

Never ask for delivery times - they'll quote you C&F and then we get stung with massive clearance/delivery costs. When you buy C&F then the exporter will choose a service with cheap landside costs, and the reason consolidators offer cheap landside costs is because they know that they can make their money up by overcharging the importer who has no choice if they're locked in on a house B/L.

If we ever went ahead with this I'd want us to buy FOB or Ex-works so that we can be in control of the freight.

I think a cheap version like the Lowestoft ones would be good as a quick stop-gap measure, however my original thinking was for something that aren't disposable.

I've seen some Ponchos that fold away on themselves into their own pocket...perfect for sticking in Camera Cases, Butty Bags, or the pocket of a Vulcan Backpack in case of any downpour!

I agree with you VL on this to make them "NOT THROW AWAY Ones" as Big Mike says the sign on the back will sell them as soon as they hit the stall. :D  :D  :D  I said a couple of years ago on this, Yellow one with the a Black Vulcan Shape or Black ones with a Yellow Vulcan.

Also at the time I think if the grey mist's of time I can remember "Its was stated that the Club does not own the rights to the Vulcan Shaped badge" it is BAE. I could be wrong on this so this time Shoot the messenger LOL    I am sure someone will put me right ;)  ;)

Hi Big Mike just a quick word on this. The merchandising committee have a very limited budget with which we try to source as many varied and quality items as possible. In an ideal situation we would love to do loads more smaller items like ponchos and please dont think we havent looked into it cos I spend a lot of my days doing just that. It is often the case that the considerable outlay and large quantities we would need to order from China for these items would be beyond our reach and would be impossible to store as well. We also have to consider that other groups and charities have a budget which enables them to give away small items or sell them at a very small profit where we are unable to do this.

The Trust also have a larger but similarly limited budget for merchandise but between us we have a large number of items now which raises a considerable amount of revenue which goes to keeping 558 in the air.

We will continue to look into all ideas that come in and the committe will make decisions based on value for money and practicalities. We have new lines in the pipeline too.  :D

Hi brains_mt...Thank you for taking the time to explain this to me ..there seems to be two elements  running through this  as i understand it....one time is of the essence two if you do not speculate you do not accumalate there is a direct coralation here.

Do the trust sell there items through the internet by mail only or do they   have an arrangment with you to market there product's direct to the public through the Vulcan Village system. If you are not working together why not  work  in concert as you have the same goal's
Both you and the trust have the same aim's   and this what i am suggesting if you combined your resourses and i presume you do not market the same product's ..you would have more purchasing power for future purchasing  and share both your outlet's to the public.
Title: Re: Suggestions for new sales items
Post by: brains_mt on August 16, 2010, 08:46:12 PM
Yes we intertrade and the club supply virtually all manpower for the Vulcan Village from volunteers. All the committee work flat out voluntarily in all sorts of ways and most of us cant do much more than we do, the vulcan having virtually taken over our lives. Most of us work full time too and have families.

There is a big difference between the Club and the Trust. The Trust hold the Vulcan in trust for the nation and the web shop is part of their fundraising. They also merchandise throught he Vulcan Village, using their own stock and buying different stock from us, the club. They also buy in bulk and store larger and different items, and have access to more storage.

The Club trade through the club stands and buy different stock to the Trust. The Trust then buy from us. We keep our finances separate from the Trust which allows us to trade, hold events and fund the Club (magazines etc) and also to make considerable donations to the Trust to support the aircraft. We have a different remit and when the aircraft eventually stops flying the club will continue to support her and ensure she is well looked after and kept in the best possible way.

If for any reason the aircraft is grounded, ownership will revert to the Heritage lottery Fund as the biggest stakeholder. The Club will continue to support her.

I hope this answers some of your points and of course our main aim is the same as the Trust, which is to keep 558 flying for as long as possible. We are two sides who work independently and together for one purpose.

The Club & the Trust must sit up and order these Poncho's or wet weather coats which this thread has mentioned, it has been mentioned on past threads over the last two years.

Even with XH558 not flying the Trust would have been making money. They would have sold out over and over again at Bournemouth and Shoreham. :D  :D

Found this website this morning http://www.propa.net/ (http://www.propa.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) it offers quite a range of stuff and some at fairly competitive prices.  Maybe someone involved in the marketing side of things might want to take a look.

Yup, I'd have had someone's arms off for a poncho this weekend!  Of course, if it has been glorious weather, they'd probably have just got in the way of other stock....

I say this with all due respect to the commitee and marketing side but this is a Suggestion Thread  and if nobody takes any notice of the thread suggestion's  and this idea of Ponchos with the appalling weather we have had in the last month is quite an obvious one and in retailing you to act quickley to capitalise on the situation...then there is know point whatsoever in suggesting anything  as all the answer's we are getting back are in the negative  ;) and the reason's that we are given are only why we should not do it and not taking up the suggestion and checking out the possabilty first before saying no...................... :?  :D  :D

Some of the reasons for not doing it are pretty good, like it's too expensive and we can't afford it. Seems fairly convincing to me. The comitee do look at the suggestions and follow them up.

And just how do you know nobody takes any notice or investigates possibilities? Costs of ponchos and many other items HAVE been investigated, but there simply isn't the money to invest in every suggestion, no matter how worthwhile.

However this is dressed up I think it's a grossly unfair and indeed unreasonable comment. Read through this thread in its entirety, and indeed similar on the old forum and note that Committee members have responded time and again to suggestions, noting that all are taken on board and considered. Gregg has summarised nicely - too expensive and no funds available. The (assumed) ponchos suggested by Oberon look to me to have no branding on then, except for the carry case and for small order runs at £2.99 each would not be viable IMHO with (say) a £1 minimum markup. I believe disposable, branded rainwear has been investigated and costs and minimum order runs have proved prohibitive. I would suggest that even acting "quickly" today to set wheels in motion for suitable coloured disposable rainwear with the Vulcan planform on it - which I assume is what we want, couldn't be produced (assuming China) and delivered before next season, never mind this season.

I might add, that I think that suitably branded throw away plastic rainwear would indeed sell well, but if the minimum order for specially produced items is in the thousands then for our cash strapped endeavours it is unfortunately an obvious No-No - unless we could find a sponsor perhaps

Hmmmm.........
How's this for an idea......
It has been stated on several occasions that items have been concidered , but have proved too costly - as an initial outlay - to produce.
Why not have a section on the Forum where the Club publishes these details { Such as : "we can order 'X' ammount of branded ponchos , but they would cost £'Y' to produce" }.......Then if any individual { or group } wishes to offer to fund any of the items , they will know what they cost { and who from the Club they need to contact }.
Yes , before anyone says it , I know the usual reply would be : "But why not give the money to the Club as a donation instead" !!

Right, this needs to stop here.

Your ideas have been noted by those concerned, but you should not expect immediate action. Money is tight and these things are reviewied by the merchandising committee periodically.  If the are viable they will make it, but it isn't always practical to bring out new lines towards the end of the season. Just because ideas aren't instantly turned into products doesn't mean no one is listening. Many ideas discussed on the forum have come to fruition in the past.

Now can we please leave this pointless discussion and get back to suggestions?

Only a suggestion........
Would it be possible , when they have time , for someone "in the know" { as-in part of the Club committee } to provide a list of sales items which have been concidered but ultimately rejected , plus a list of items that are currently in the process of being concidered / procured ?
Also , if possible , why items were rejected.

Ok Mr Tim Noted :D STOPS HERE FROM ME

But feedback goes both ways, I know you are very busy at shows and your own lives to lead ;)  ;) , it would be nice for people who put suggestions forward to have some feedback saying their particular suggestion is being investigated. Brains MT did this through this thread. :)

Would look very smart in black with a decent gold logo.

Gillet is a posh name for a body warmer basically!!

I think it's well known that I am not a fan of the Corporate black/gold logo especially on clothing - with that in mind there could be others, so would there be a market for something like a black/gold quartered rugby shirt with a small Vulcan logo above the left breast?

It's in the Trust colours would have a Vulcan but not at all corporate in design?

I didn't see aerial toppers on the list but I'm sure that I have seen them mentioned before,a mini Vulcan sat on top of my car aerial would certainly rival my wifes "Disney Tinkerbell".
As I say it,s probably been mentioned before.

How about a car windscreen sun shade with the Vulcan on the front. Very useful when you leave your car in a sunny car park. Plus large area for details about the project and sponsor's logos.
 Cheap to produce.

Or Side windows shades. A little more expensive though.

How about selling some non-Vulcan items on the webstore?  Specifically things like the Haynes manuals for Concorde, Lanc & Spitfire, and other models like the Lightning.  Many people interested in the Vulcan have a general interest in aviation and similar aircraft.

Also, what about doing this model (from http://www.modelpower.com (http://www.modelpower.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)), which I think is better than the ones we currently do (as a display model). SP aviation used to do this one, and Air Tattoo are doing it now:-

Hi Tim,

The plan is certainly to expand out the products with both Vulcan and other aircraft related lines, but I'm afraid it's a project for Autumn, ready for the Christmas trade.

I need to see the end of September and shows, before I can spend time on this.

At the moment, the Web Store sales are ramping up nicely with the lines we have. As always, we have to see returns off our investment to date to fund future stock etc...

Regards,

Not exactly a new item , but......
Just looked on the Web-shop.  I see the 2011 calendars are already out , but when are the 2011 diaries { the pocket "week to a page" ones } going to be available ??
Or aren't the Club bothering to do them this year ??

In the Air Tattoo Catalogue they do a cuddly Meerkat with a sash.

How about a better Meerkat cuddly toy in a VTTS Flying Suit?

We might even be able to pursuade comparethemeerkat.com to feature it.

Kids and adults would love them!

Simples!
