Title: Operation 2015 launches - to run all season.
Post by: PA28 on June 07, 2013, 02:01:35 PM
Operation 2015

We are delighted to announce that it is now technically possible to extend XH558's flying life - but we need the funding to do it.
This work will run in tandem with the 2013 Winter Service and we need to see a total of £400,000 pledged by October this year before we can be assured of success to complete both the service and airframe modifications.

This also assumes we are able to keep the income stream going through the summer to cover existing overheads.

See full details here: http://operation2015.org/index.html (http://operation2015.org/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Hi Ian

When will this start? I have tried to pledge straight away, after filling in the details of my address etc there are no buttons to submit my pledge yet!!!!!

I probably missed something along the way "Early bird " trying to show immediate support etc. ;)  ;)

Hmmm tried again, got the same message and then a couple of minutes later I got two emails about my pledges! Did I just double my contribution without knowing it..?

We are monitoring and will keep checking - loads of browsers, loads of devices, it really is a nightmare to get these systems to work across all platforms. We are seeing plenty of activity through, so the majority seem to have no issues.

Keep giving feedback by all means - it's much appreciated and is the only way to resolve the common teething problems.....

Now come on! How can you extend an aircraft's flying life without engines?

Easy if the airframe was running out of life faster than the engines. From what I can remember from the AGM there's no engine life extension.

Just to keep things simple, a pilot learning to fly a Vulcan is taught that it consists of many parts which are grouped together into two major bits - Engines and Airframe. It does not fly very well on one part without the other! If I was told the aircraft was serviceable, I knew both bits were being referred to together. If an aircraft's flying life is extended, it means the whole thing - otherwise we would have been told the airframe life or the engine life had been extended. OK?

From the Club AGM:

The airframe fatigue life extension will enable the whole of the engine life available to be consumed... However, engines are not the only limiting factor component-wise affecting end of flight.

I'm not sure it's ever be stated what these life-limiting components are.  What was stated was that there were other factors that would make it "quite possible that she would have to stop flying early in 2014".

We know engines can't be overhauled or serviced to make them last longer, so the question is: what has changed with these other factors to allow flight until 2015?  If engines were one of these factors, have they been given the all clear for more cycles?  And for other components, what were they and how has extra life been eeked out of them?

AKE never comes on the forum although I set him up with an access in 2006..... I think he possibly just  monitors what is said....

Company policy........ not to post on any forum.... or it was previously...

We billed this today at the Newbury Radio Rally as a "double fund raising effort" as we still need funds for day to day stuff, but need to find the money for the wing mod as well, so have been encouraging people to donate as much as they can this year.

At the moment there are two spare engines and 4 in the a/c, one of which is the one with suspect metal in oil a while back that was being monitored. Perhaps this monitoring is proving positive.

Ref the leaflet about Operation 2015 'Flying Life Extension Revealed'.

Will there be some of these available at RIAT because I want to give my leaflets, and a draw ticket, to a young fella down the road. He's aircraft mad (can't understand that, can you?).
I would like to have another one for my XH558 records so if they are going to be available that would be great.

I will tell him that he can have any of the other prizes but as he is not old enough to ride a motorbike of 883cc he's to remember who bought him the ticket if he wins 3rd prize!!

Leaflets will of course be available for Operation 2015 at all airshows where there is a Vulcan Village (large or small). The Club have also been issued with them so they will be available on their Stands as well.

Full data packs will also be available shortly on request through the Website.

Raffle tickets are available form both or on demand through the Website

It should be ok if they are freely available at club and village stands, I can pick one up at RIAT, presuming I will be helping of course. I'm watching out for the call to arms!
Thanks though Sarah, hope you are starting to feel better, missed you being at Throckmorton.

After a discussion over the w/e can any one clarify for me please...

Is the Operation 2015 £400K pledge scheme to cover both the 2013 winter servicing and the wing mod or just the wing mod?

From recollection of our briefing, I believe the position is as follows:

There are two strands to the 'Operation 2015' fundraising appeal:
•   £400k for the 2013/14 winter service and wing leading edge Mod
•   £400k winter 2013/14 'overheads'

These figures are in addition to the Modification Ph1 and Ph2 feasibility / design shares schemes worth around £100k. A combination of pledges, share packs and general fundraising will all go towards the targets.
