Our press release seems to have been picked up by The Register:-

Not exactly positive press bit it's exposure!
-
The Register covers all its stories with a good dose of sarcasm, but in essence it's pretty accurate. They covered a lot of stuff for us over the last few years. Hopefully they will continue to do so.

Any coverage is better than nothing, puts it across just how bad funds are. Should be something on Central tv tonight, the guy in front of us was being interviewed just after she had landed so look out for their coverage tonight

I see they still think Thursday's flyby was an on the spot decision! Mr Nobull making the usual comments he always does, however most non trolling people seem to be asking the exact questions that would be expected - why is it that every time she gets back in the air we need another half million, what is it going to be spent on, and why has 'someone' ended up 'letting' us run out of money?
We need some very encouraging answers to be put somewhere, because to be honest people haven't got a huge amount of money, and the last last minute appeal was supposed to be the last one, and probably the one before that. Sooner or later, the public are just going to think, "well, every time they say they're about to shut up shop, it never happens, so they must be OK really". The boy who cried wolf, and all that. The situation must be made as clear as possible to maximise the interest in helping out.

Had a mention in Daily mail today --- have a look on the on line version and read comments !!!!

Ive put my comments on another thread!

In my opinion for what it's worth the Trust/PR company should have run with the success of of XH558 set against a background of our countries dire financial situation we are living in unusal times and showing the juxtaposition with so many cuts on the horizon XH558 just joins a long list of people putting there hands out we should have highlighted the difference between XH558 and the general situation i beleave they have missed a trick here and line that should have been sold to the media in this financial climate the Vulcan project won through despite of the general financial hardship we shall all see

That is indeed one of the many stories to have been told - and why she (XH558) was christened "The Spirit of Great Britain" since it sums up quite nicely, the pure BRITISH BULLDOG SPIRIT of GRIT, DETERMINATION AND DRIVE to succeed against all the odds!
It was written in all the Magazine advertising we did too - and is still being used now!

Generally the Trust is accused of not being open enough! Then when they are, that upsets people too - they really cannot win. At the time they did only have 3 weeks worth of funding remaining. It's since been squeezed a bit further thanks to the Club and a few others contributing. When do you suggest people were told they were almost out of money? Should the Trust have left it to their administrators to tell us?!

Not wishing to sound funny, but we're told about numerous very expensive adverts in many mags/papers etc.... in the several years I've been a Vulcan fanatic, I'm yet to see a single advert for the cause. Being a relatively skint member of the working class, I'm wondering how many people said adverts actually target, and what publications they appear in? If I'm on the constant lookout for 558 related ads and can't find any, what about those who are unaware of the current dilemma?

From the 10th Aug. Newsletter :
""we have mounted full-page advertisements in publications such as:
* Flight International
* Armed Forces Day Magazines
* Haymarket Motoring Titles
* SAGA Magazine
* Top Gear Magazine
* Best of British
* Classic Car Weekly
* BBC History
""
As some { semi-} joking suggestions were made at the time , maybe adverts / articles would have been better served featuring in the likes of FHM , Loaded , Max Power & Nuts !! ;)

Sir Jack isn't dead though, so don't know how light hearted he'd find it! And he saved us in 06, so 4 years ago.

Sort of nackers my point. Sorry Sir Jack if you're reading this although I suspect you're not :-). He stepped down as Wolves President shortly afterwards and I thought I read that he'd died. He's only 87 so will undoubtedly outlive XH558s flying career.

Got a piece into the local Messenger to advertise Oct 15th dinner and mentioned need for dosh as well.
-
The Sunday Times (News Review) October 3rd has a very good review by Jeremy Clarkson, it should get some good response.
-
Nice piece on the Help for Heroes appearance in the Warwick/Leamington Courier on 1 October with photographs and details of the current appeal - unfortunately no link to the website provided.
-
Thanks for the heads up Curly.
Just read his piece and it is great. It is headed "C'mon, this tired old bird deserves a second chance".
Also, "the Vulcan flew low over my house the other day. No one understood why I was pointing and grabbing my privates".
I did take umbridge at the description of supporters as 'adenoidal and wearing cheap shoes' but that is Clarkson for you. Who cares though if it had the desired effect of getting more support and dosh.
Not sure if you can get on-line to view the column without subscribing to The Times.
Thanks anyway Jeremy, Sir.

Thanks to Cheryl and Craig, the Courier reporters. :D

If anyone else can fire off a letter to the editor of thier local newpapers - please do so ASAP.
Most local newspapers are available to read online, and have a 'Contact Us' Email address.......... hit that or the 'Letters' page' better still just go direct to 'Editor' or 'newsdesk' with Vulcans plight.
(Works for me :D ... and has done for the last 3 appeals !!)

I E-mailed my 'ally' David Brine at the Southern Daily Echo last week...unfortunately I got an automated out of office reply saying he's on leave until Nomveber. So I forwarded the same E-mail to the Newsdesk and I haven't heard anything back :( .
However, there might be something on Julian Clegg's show on Radio Solent tomorrow morning. I had a reply to an E-mail I sent them and they said their press office was going to try and organise an interview. I've no idea what's happening with this now but I'll have to listen in to find out!

Colin Van Greffen from the Solent Skies museum was trying to set this up for me last year but I always seem to be away when he rings.

I hope it all comes together for you Mike and you pull off as great interview to make people in the South sit up "They have enjoyed her more than others I think" my brother in law saw her while he was playing golf but will not put his hand in his pocket no matter what I tell him re the funding

Just listened to it and it's not anything we don't already know.
On the other hand , it's probably something that the majority of listeners didn't know ! :o ;)
On a different note .......
No interest whatsoever from the rags in Wales ........something to do with the fact that '558 hasn't been anywhere near here since the Vulcans were withdrawn from RAF service !! { And with a population of over 3 million , that's potentially a lot of supporters - or at least donators - being missed }
{ ** Hint..... the "Wales National Airshow" in Swansea is back for 2011 -- no dates yet , but it's usually been the same weekend as Yeovilton Airshow.......Hint ** }

Just got home and picked up this E-mail from Head of Planning Kim Michaels, who set the ball rolling with todays coverage on Solent...

Hi Mike,
All sorted and it [the Vulcan] was one of our top stories today.
I believe TV have picked up the story too.
Please do keep me up to date with developments as we'd love to follow the story as our audience love the Vulcan.
Regards Kim

South Today did ask for stories this evening.
Sally Taylor asked for items of local interest. So lots of requests for coverage of 558's plight with connections to the Bournemouth, Shoreham, Dunsfold and Goodwood displays. Not to mention that Robert Pleming and the one and only Sad Sam Evans, are local residents.

Well Well things are moving on the BBC South today programme :D :D I sent a email to them telling them about the plight of XH558 etc at lunch time (China time) and this evening (my time) I phoned my wife and she told me the BBC wanted to talked to me to get the facts correct before they do the article.
I phoned the South today Team and the person who wanted to speak to me was not there, the lady said "They were very interested and they was going to do a spot on XH558. Because they wanted to contact me I told them they should be really talking to Dr P and to contact Vulcan to the Sky office. ;) ;) because of the time difference in contacting me.
I have telephoned Michael Trotter up and gave him the heads up and to get in touch with the BBC South-today team, we might just get a radio broadcast or a TV spot who knows?????  Fingers Crossed I hope it comes off.
We can do this keep the faith, the Fat lady has a sore throat so......
So Johnri you suggested, in my lunch hour I did what you asked.

558 based at Lynham................. :o
Is that temporary or has the trust negotiated a deal with MOD :?:
That would not meet the requirements set by the HLF for the grant if that is the case :o
Why is it taking sooooooooooooooooooooooooo long to decide where her new home is going to be.......... :x :x :x

We know '558 is based at Lyneham for the Winter, just as she was based at Brize Norton for the Summer.
As for a new home, it's hardly a minor decision to make is it? All sorts of plans coupled with it, not just a hangar and runway, although those 2 items aren't exactly abundant for an aircraft of '558's size.
Then, as Landyman quite rightly points out, there is the money factor. According to the various published piecharts, a goodly chunk of the Trust's structured debt relates to '558's previous hangarage - unless the Trust buys an airfield, they need to enter into a commercial arrangement with an existing facility and they will undoubtedly need to be confident that they will be paid and that the Trust has some financial stability.

If you were trying to buy a new house without any money, no guarantee of getting any and the possibility of going out of business any day, I think you'd find it pretty tricky to find anywhere....

Don't know if it's been on other regional TV news, but BBC Oxford News has just had a feature about the impending deadline, so the message is getting out there.
With just over £30.000 a day needed, it CAN still be done! ;)

Also news headlines on Classic FM (nationally) with good details and comments. No website or donation line given but VTTS named so better than nothing !

Good report on Points West and reporter indicated £75k now needed so, if right, that means it has been a good day for donations. :)

I thought South To-day might have done a spread after I talked to the lady at the BBC the other day :( :( :(
She sounded really keen and said they "Would do something" perhaps they could not get hold of Dr P whom I said would give them the facts & figures :) :)
Perhaps tonight they might run it with the day drawing closer

Good interview by Dr. Plemming on BBC Radio Solent this evening.
I will post a linky thing as soon as the prog is over for a listen again (still on til 7)
Nice to hear him thank all Solent listeners who have supported the cause. I think this is important, as I said at the AGM we are very good at asking for money but not that great at saying thank you when we get it (we are usually looking forward to the next hurdle by the time we have raised the money.) Hopefully we will now have a bit of breathing space.
Linky thing: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0 ... 1_11_2010/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00bs8td/Steve_Harris_01_11_2010/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) @ about 18 mins in.
Interviewer starts off stating we need £800,000 and Robert did not put him straight, not a bad thing IMHO as we will need that money to come in and now we have this head of steam it would be good to keep on going.
Robert does talk about some "initiatives" that are now coming to fruition. So looking forward to interesting times ahead.
About four mins in all, hopefully he will be asked to do some more follow ups though the media seem more interested in "We are all going to die stories" than "We are all going to survive" stories.
-
Good piece on the west country tonight...

Successful fundraising covered in today'Times with nice picture of 558. (p.16) but unfortunately they are under the impression that 43,000 pounds was the total.... can we alert them to their mistake please, they always publish an apology, so more publicity!

Some good articles there Ian, plus lots of positive feedback (apart from Lincolnshire who even managed to put backspin on the story "problem plagued bomber" indeed did they even notice that we only missed one show this year, and we did both days of their show despite only getting out of the hangar the day before)
Any chance of them shutting Waddington as part of the defence revue (could always move sentry's to Marham/ Cottesmore/ lyneham/ somewhere that loves aircraft.)

Email sent to Bournemouth Echo - thanking them for thier coverage and support of 'everything' Vulcan :D

Now all that's needed is for these same publications to be informed that '558 requires continuous support & fundraising , rather than giving the impression that the Appeals are it !

That's the tricky part. If you're not on the verge of collapse, or haven't just been saved, there isn't a story for them.

Seems the rest of the world knew about it since October of last year.
Smith & Williamson, 26th October 2010
Businesses struggle to obtain VAT certification as deadline approaches and guidance remains unpublished
Suppliers of aircraft-related services and those involved in the manufacture and supply of parts for the aircraft industry need to ensure that they are ready for new VAT rules intended to come into force on 1 January 2011. Accountancy firm Smith & Williamson points out that this includes obtaining evidence of who ultimately uses the aircraft.
This follows an EU directive that the UK must change its rules on zero-rating supplies of aircraft-related goods and services.
UK VAT rules have historically allowed most aircraft-related goods and services to be zero-rated provided the aircraft is over 8,000kg in weight. Unfortunately, this simple test was not compatible with EU VAT rules, except for certain aircraft used by State Institutions. The UK has therefore been forced to change to comply with EU rules.
-
That would be just as the October Appeal saves the day to get the aircraft through the winter, only for the Trust to be hit with another cost increase at the start of 2011.
-
Surely the VAT charged would be recovered as input tax on the next VAT Return ? The only downside would then be a short term cash flow problem between payment of the invoice and recovery via the VAT Return.
Tabby
-
Yes, short term cash-flow affected till recovered at best in April, but it also puts additional burden on monthly overheads.
http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news ... _VAT_rise/ (http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/8875195.Last_Vulcan_threatened_by_VAT_rise/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
-

yes i know when it was, the point is that the changes were known about at least as far back as October, so saying it's sudden is a bit inaccurate.

Good piece in last night's Shropshire Star to bring readers up to date with the needs of 558. I wonder of this was in response a general push or more local initiative. Either way, it gave us some column inches and a link to the webby was included.

Looking at some of the comments on there, some people are obviously not able to read or take in what is said on the news. :x

I thought they were supposed to be our bloody friends?
They are... I think it has been done deliberately to get more reaction and publicity for Vulcan. After all - it was only mean't to be a letter to the editor. Neal and the team saw fit to add a piccy - and put it in the 'Editors choice' bit.
Both articles are getting her into public view again. Out of a few negatives comes a positive - media attention !! ;)
(Have added my bit to the Reef Thread too :) )

Perhaps we should write a letter to the editor too? ;-)

The great thing about this is the overwhelming letters of support in response - and as stated above more free publicity :D

It will be free to view the plane between 22nd April and 2nd May, with the only fee coming in the form of parking. However, if guests make a purchase from Wetherspoons in the main terminal building, a discounted car parking ticket of £3 will be offered and this will cover the parking for the five hours the plane can be viewed - a saving of up to £7.

Good piece in last night's Shropshire Star promoting Cosford Air Show with about 1/4 page on the Vulcan story and specifically 558 - and mentioned how it's funded - but not a mention of the critical financial position.

My brother Alan just E-Mailed the cutting below from what I think is the Portsmouth News
Don't know if you will be able to read the blurb, but a bit more welcome Media coverage. :D :D

A certain person was volunteered to do a live broadcast interview on BBC Radio Lincolnshire tomorrow, Sunday 5th (That would be me then!)
It is scheduled to be around 4pm on the Howard Leader Show and it's with regard to the 50th Anniversary book, the significance of XH558 and Vulcans to the region, and I hope, a bit on the new home.
I'll get as many good plugs in as possible and will be looking out for the trick/catch me out question they inevitably try to slot in over funding and what an expense it all is for just one aircraft!
Listen in if you are about: http://www.bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire/programmes (http://www.bbc.co.uk/lincolnshire/programmes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

I got a mailshot email from the Yeovilton Air Day organisers trying to tempt me with tickets, and it's pretty much all Vulcan related. They've even been useful enough to point out the funding is only up to July at this point......
RNAS Yeovilton Air Day on 9 July is set to welcome back the mighty Avro Vulcan, XH588, for another spellbinding flying display. However, while its return to this flagship Royal Navy event seems assured, the financial climate could still act against it. A recent injection of sponsorship has given the Vulcan’s funding campaign a welcome boost and appears to have secured its continued airworthiness until the end of July. Its future, after that, remains uncertain at this stage.
The Avro Vulcan gave a show-stopping performance at Air Day 2010. The subject of one of the most high-profile aircraft restoration and maintenance campaigns of all time, XH588 has come to be known as ‘The People’s Aircraft’. That’s an indication of the passion and support much of the population has for the 50+ year-old Mighty Delta – the only Vulcan flying anywhere in the world, and a thundering reminder of the outstanding contribution made to the post-war jet age by British designers and engineers.
First flown in 1960, XH588 saw over three decades of RAF service. It then became a dedicated air display performer, prior to it being grounded in early 1993. Returned to the skies in 2007, its resurrection has brought it to the attention of a whole new generation of spectators.
From its bellowing engine surge on takeoff to the victorious climb that ends its routine, the Vulcan is unequalled in the airshow arena. Air Day’s organisers are confident that the Vulcan will, once more, be a complete show-stealer but remain mindful that its return is subject to its ongoing financial well-being. Up to date information on the Vulcan’s fundraising campaign is regularly published on the official XH558 website - http://www.vulcantothesky.org (http://www.vulcantothesky.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

I've just stuck a post and link on the Isle of Man TT facebook page. Dunno if they'll ditch it or not, but I did say please, and mentioned I'm a 'liker' as I'm a genuine fan.... lol

Mmmm - from the above link:
"XH558 – a recently restored aircraft and one of the few remaining Vulcans which is able to take flight. "

Well it's true , after a fashion -- after all , no doubt XM655 & XL426 are "able to take flight"....in much the same way as a certain Victor did 2 years ago !!

Not bad for the Sun!
No mention of the Club though or how to help???
And I'm sure Sam wont mind being described as a vulcan enthusiast
-
Not entirely sure the caption about her being a 'deadly bird' is entirely appropriate... lol
Edit: just posted a comment giving the Club a plug and a link, dunno if it will escape moderation though.....

Online version, gives out the Text donation service. Not seen the paper, but know someone who will have a copy.
-
I don't see why it shouldn't - they have given the text donation number etc....
-
Just had to chuckle at the fact Sam's described as an "enthusiast"!! :o
For th Sun however, 'tis quite a well written piece though :)
-
Well, I don't think you'll find many of the people involved who are more enthusiastic about 558 than Sam. I'm sure he's plotting an extension to his back garden to keep her in after she retires from the sky.... lol
-
Big colour pic of 558 on the front page of Western Daily Press today

I see some berk on The Sun's site has decided that 558 should not fly "in case it falls on a row of houses"... :-s

Hehe, i know it's true I read it in the sun!
What you see here is the end result of pretty much a whole day spent with the guy from the Sun and I've no idea how much time Micheal Trotter spent setting it up. But all in all well worth while.
We are getting some good press coverage at the moment which is down to Richard and his team.

Bugger, forgot to get a copy to keep.... lol
Edit: found one! :D Handed the paper, open to the right page to my missus, who promptly asked me why I got the paper specifically for an article about a mum-to-be who eats furniture polish. I suggested she looked at the other page, with a ruddy great pic of 558 on it... lol

"The world’s last flying Vulcan warplane, saved from the scrapyard by Mail on Sunday readers"
WTF? Is this like when the Sun says it's overturned stuff happening in Parliament or something when they didn't do a thing, or has history been rewritten in some mysterious way? I thought a certain Mr Walton and his family took delivery of 558 direct from the RAF, and she never went for scrap as such either?
-
Speedy........you don't remember the 2009 Appeal , then ??
-
I think various newspapers have 'saved' 558 through publicising different appeals over the years. It's all good publicity.
As wcg says, it was the MoS's turn back in 2009...
Gully
-
I think you gotta let them have their glory-story in return for some publicity :)
Just been told there is a half page article in Hello magazine, page 45.

-
I don't mind who claims to save 558 as long as she is saved!!! :D
In that case, I did. :p
-
Speedy........you don't remember the 2009 Appeal , then ??
No, actually. A bit before my 558 time. However, I seem to recall she's been 'saved' many times in the past, and I doubt you could argue that any individual, company or newspaper can claim to have done anything but help to save her, which is a massive difference. That is with the most likely exception of the Walton family who originally bought her, Sir Jack Hayward for his donation that may well have saved the initial restoration, and of course, a certain Mr Eddie Forrester, without whom I strongly doubt we'd have seen through last year, never mind the one just gone.
Or maybe I'm just being picky?
-
'Helping' save '558 doesn't make a headline though...
If a little journalistic licence is the price of national publicity, I have no objections.
Gully
-
I stand to be corrected { not having access to the old Forum any more means I can't check } , but I seem to recall that it was the primarily due to the publicity & support in the Mail in 2009 that led to a massive increase in public donations { and quite a few new Club & Forum Members } at a time when the outcome of the Appeal looked to be extremely doubtful.
-
And in 2007/8 I believe it was the Telegraph if my memory serves me correctly. I think we should be grateful for the publicity and they need headlines that sell. :)
-
Just had a quick "Wickle"........Telegraph was the 2007 { autumn } Appeal -- article says their readership donated £300k !
As for the Mail on Sunday in the 2009 Appeal , their article says that their readership donated £500k in 5 days { and it was that Appeal that was really in crisis at the time }
As far as I'm concerned , if the articles help raise that ammount of money they can claim whatever publicity they want !!

-
Quote : "Funded entirely by charitable donations and the UK Lottery's Heritage Fund...."
Err.......maybe someone should explain to them that the LHF payment was a one-off at the start of the restoration , as this reads as if it is still helping to fund the project !
-
A good item though.

Managed to get a little plug for the website on BBC Radio Suffolk this afternoon.
Lesley Dolphin was asking for people who had jobs starting with the letter V to phone in. We only heard about it near the end of the show but I phoned in as a double V ie. Vulcan Volunteer.
They called me back and I managed to get just a couple of minutes right at the end of the programme. In the short time available I managed to tell her about the Diamond Jubilee next year and she asked me to give the website address.

Nice one Richard. Cometh the moment, cometh the man. ;) :)

I only had access to the printed report, but if it encourages just one more donation, it's got to be good for XH558; the majority of people who see/read the report would not be the avid enthusiast that one gets on here, and are already donees/members.

Yay, Cadets is a fabulous organisation for both sexes. Could not recommend it enough.
£120/yr for 100 parade nights of 2.5 hrs each.......value for money or what.
Where else could you get your kids on a weeks camp, full board and get change from £40??? Flying, shooting all thrown in.
-
I spent 5 years in the ATC, some of my best years. I too would recommend it to anyone.
-
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I'm also the Civ Com chairman @ 309 so get really involved with it all. :D :D :D

Happy memories of my days in the ATC. (2495 Hythe Sqn) back in the late 60's /early 70's
Summer camps at St Mawgan (flying in Chipmunks and clambering about in Shackletons), Brawdy (day with RAF Police dog section), Old Sarum (glider training). Duke of Edinburgh award challenges. Drill, Aircraft recognition nights etc... heady days but with very fond memories of cadging fags off the Flt Sgt drill instructor into the bargain
Home base used to be Shore Road in Hythe - we had to negociate a few MTBs when doing drill practice.

Well , can't see any mention of this anywhere on the Forum {  }.......
Following from a post on the Touchdown News Newsgroup :
Afternoon all,
We've got some Vulcan news for you today as Gareth Stringer talks to Dr Robert
Pleming about another funding shortfall and the realistic prospects for the
project beyond 2012.
Vulcan XH558 - Winter Maintenance and 2012 Update With Dr Robert Pleming
http://www.globalaviationresource.com/reports/2012/airshows-avro-vulcan-xh558-update-with-dr-robert-pleming/index.php
With the UK's airshow season looming on a not-too-distant horizon, Gareth
Stringer caught up with the the Vulcan to the Sky Trust's Chief Executive, Dr
Robert Pleming, to discuss the chances of XH558 playing her part in a unique
year and whether it could be the last opportunity to see her.
-
Well , can't see any mention of this anywhere on the Forum {  }.......
There's nothing of any significance in that article that hasn't already been given to supporters FIRST via the e-newsletters (in particular the one linked from the trustees statement, so why the evils?
-
Quite simply , it's the old argument that 'communication is everything' , and has nothing to do with "Supporters must know first"
As this interview was given last week { according to the article } , why not give a "heads up" on the Forum , in the Newsletter , or on the main Website - given that it is the Trust's - to inform people that an article / interview is due to be published ?
That way , those that want to can disseminate the information -- be that via Twitter , their Facebook pages or on other Fora/Newsgroups.
Reading through this thread , most of the posts are along the lines of "I found this in our local newspaper today...."
Surely it would be better if they were more in the nature of "There will be an article/interview in/on 'XYZ' on 'xxx'-day" ?
Just having a quick read through the posts --- of the ones which are giving advanced notice of forthcoming features , the vast majority are those done by Club Members rather than the Trust.....the only Trust one I can find which falls into this category is the one in 2010 mentioning the forthcoming adverts in various magazines ; Other than that , all mention of Trust articles or TV/radio interviews appear to be retrospective.
A common line from the Trust is "spread the word". Therefore , I would have thought it preferable to forwarn people of upcoming features.
-
This has only been published today and is planned to feature in the newsletter at 5pm.
Only natural to let GAR have first chance of promoting it and we will now follow on. Features like this have to be 'built' first, then you link to them. Crikey - please give us chance for the thing to be hosted and then linked too....
Problem with the internet, is that everyone is on to anything straight away.. lots of switches and knobs to tweak and it's humanly impossible to do them all at once, no matter how well intentioned we are.. but as ever, we will take the flack. Meantime, I'll now upload the pictures to the latest service pictures under 'latest news' that are also linked in the newsletter..... then later, last months Flying Fund Draw etc... etc...
And no, I'm not blowing my own trumpet, but can you understand the work that has to go on here??? Oh, had to finish off the newsletter first!
So in other words folks, cut us some slack please- have patience and all will be revealed....
Cheers,
Ian
-
You're doing a grand job PA28. Keep it up fella, it's appreciated.
That goes for all the others working behind the scenes too. :)
-
Last thing we need right now is any flack to the folks who do a helluva good job for 558 - on top of day jobs.
Please can we pull together?
-
My feelings exactly !
We all have moans about this and that, but a lot of work is being done all the time, and we should be thankful that dedicated people just get on with it and rarely get thanked.
Great article/photos in the GAR article btw, but the comment at the end is great, coming from Neil McCarthy, who knows a great deal about having to raise money for a jet, what a nice gesture, made my day ! :D
-
Well , Scampton61 asked me what I thought was wrong , so I replied. Those who are seeing it as "flack" or "Trust bashing" are placing their own interpretation on what I posted.
Ian ;
Forgive me if I'm wrong , but aren't you the "Marketing & Events Manager" { or so it says on the list of Trust contacts } ??
If so , then surely the task of updating people on forthcoming interviews/articles would fall within the remit of Richard Clarke , who is the "Press & PR Manager" ?? Or does every posting on here or on the Facebook page relating to the Trust have to be made by you ? { no , I don't mean that in a sarcastic way ... I mean : are you the only Trust Member 'authorised' to do so , or do all such posts have be passed down to your 'office' as it is your responsibility to post them ? }
To clarify my previous post & thus hopefully to explain my reasoning behind it :
The Internet is different from 'conventional media' , as any articles are available until removed by the Website.
With newspaper articles , surely it is preferable for people to know beforehand that an article is to be published ? { who knows....the newspaper publishers may notice an increase in sales on that day , especially if people tell them why , and may be more likely to feature such articles in future }
And if you only find out about it a day or two after it's been published , then what ?? If you are lucky , the newspaper in question will have the article on their website. Failing that , how many people will bother contacting the newspaper asking "do you have a back-copy from 'x-y-z' , because it had an article about XH558 in it ?" ??
Magazines differ in as much that they are usually available for a period of between a week and a month { unless sold out }....but again , if you miss it , how many people are going to contact the publishers asking "do you have a back-copy from 'x-y-z' , because it had an article about XH558 in it ?" ?? { After all , many magazines still do not have a website featuring articles from past editions }
Radio/television.... yes , the likes of the BBC have facilities such as "iPlayer"/"Listen again" , but do local stations ?
Was it 2010/11 { just checked : 27th Oct. 2010 } ..... there was a post made here : "Received text from Fiona at 7ish this morning (thanks Fi!) to let me know Dr Pleming had just been on Radio Five." with a link to BBC iPlayer . I posted that link on several Newsgroups & Fora { although the Fora weren't aviation ones } that I was a member of at the time.....the general response ?? "I'd have listened to it live , but I can't be a****d to go on iPlayer & listen to it !"
Hope that explains things better.

I think that's called (in management psycho babble) Pre-emptive marketing to a specific target.
Enough people here know my views on the way news is disseminated so I'll just keep my mouth shut ......
-
I think that advanced notice of an article appearing in the paper, or someone being interviewed on the radio is 100 times better than being told about it afterwards. ;)
I agree with the things you mentioned in your last post WCG.................. :)

Hi all,
RC is a part time volunteer (although he spends a great deal of time on XH558), and is responsible for populating stories to Press and Media in the regions, as indeed, are our retained PR agency that mainly cover Nationals and major magazine titles.
It is often a 'scatter-gun' policy, and you never know what is going to be published or printed and on what channels or at what time. If a Radio interview or TV clip is planned, it is often at very short notice and many times, plans are changed if the nominated crew are sent off to 'a bigger story' by their producer. If we are well aware of an event in advance, we would certainly publicise it - after all, it' s in our interests as 'marketeers' to do so.
If it's anything to do with our direct online presence, be that, newsletters, 'latest news', this forum notice section, main web pages, webstore etc.. then it is my responsibility to update them. This is a very rich in content, complex website and you have to be familiar with the software. So, in direct answer, yes, I publish all 'online' messages from the Trust.
However, that is also just part of what I do, so getting it all done 'instantaneously' is not always possible when dealing with breaking news on the internet. Between the agency and myself, we also look after Twitter and Facebook feeds, whilst I have merchandise development, ordering, marketing concepts and script writing duties as a major part of my daily life.
Add in an Appeal, with the team analysing about ten different income streams to arrive at the daily takings for publication, you might just get the idea of why (when we quite rightly have a small team) things can't always happen straight away. Very soon, the whole mix changes, (or should I say, gets more complex) as we hope to start planning the 2012 season providing funds are found by the deadline.
Above all, we all try our best. Like I said, I'm not looking for brownie points, but you have to imagine some comments cut deep with the team when everyone here is running their little socks off! I'm here all the time viewing, but less able to partake in conversations and general banter.
Meantime, here is the first story off a press release that was issued with an 'all points bulletin' yesterday. Let's hope more channels pick it up soon.
http://3d-car-shows.com/2012/future-of- ... uary-29th/ (http://3d-car-shows.com/2012/future-of-last-flying-vulcan-to-be-decided-on-february-29th/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This one correctly identifies that the total balance is needed by 31st March.
Regards,
Ian

That new date on an 'old story' is down to me keeping the Echo informed of the current plight. My contact had asked to be kept informed regarding Vulcan. I sent him a link to our current homepage - he did the rest by making it a news item.
....... and yes, no doubt he and the Vulcan will be getting some negative comments - as per usual. On the positive side ... it is publicity and a reminder that a Vulcan STILL exists ! (just)
-
In this months EVO magazine we get an indirect mention in Nick Trott's Ed Speak.
He is talking about the new Lamborghini Aventador J and mentions that "Without cars like the J, or Adele's voice, or the fact that a Vulcan is still flying (just), or that Ducati built a road-going MotoGP bike, or Slash's guitar playing, life could soon escalate into an exercise in futility."
Only a brief mention but perhaps something that could be followed up on in the future. Petrolheads love her Ladyship. :D

There is also a small piece in today's Sunday Express.

Bournemouth Echo had this on page 3 today...
I am ever hopeful that she will be up and running by the time Bournemouth Air Festival comes round. She deserves a seaside outing this year. (Having missed a few - due to going tech and weather issues over the past years)
http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/9 ... destroyed/ (http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/9739784.VIDEO__Vulcan_may_be_no_show_at_Air_Festival_after_engines_destroyed/)
:(
-
Argh - Technicians - Does nobody know that we have engineers - and they are very good - Technicians work in a bay, wear white coats and drink alot of tea, and no much else.
Standard factory terminology.....
The 'pecking order' is usually :
"Operators" use machines ; "Setters" ensure the machines are producing the right sized parts ; "Fitters" replace basic items { and have "Fitters mates" to act as 'gofers'/make the tea for them } ; "Technicians" { "Techies" } replace more complicated items and/or repair basic items ; "Engineers" do the things the "Techies" can't...or more usually these days , sit in offices drinking loads of tea & filling out reams of paperwork !!
'Sparkies' , on the other hand , are usually only subdivided into 2 species : "Electricians" & "Electrical Engineers".

-
Argh - Technicians - Does nobody know that we have engineers - and they are very good - Technicians work in a bay, wear white coats and drink alot of tea, and no much else.
Deeleyt: Unfortunately due to the increased technology in motor vehicles, mechanics are now refered to as technicians. So everybody with a tool box full of spanners is now a technician. White coats belong to laboratory technicians. Clip boards and tea are the tools progress chasers or yes! men and women. Where as engineers now wear shirts and ties and hide in offices behind their computers.
This next bit must only be read by real engineers (People who can think, look, advise, problem solve and complete the task) No offence intended or implied. so if you are a real fully qualified times served engineer I apologise for any possible offence.
-
Sorry - this engineer don't wear shirt and ties, I do have a computer, but i never hide behind it althoughI use it alot (Oh - I might be behind a computer, because I'm fixing it), I am always available to sort out problems other can (or wont)
Yes had a conversation along those lines when I took a car in the other day, Yes, sir I will get one of our "Technicians" to look at your car. Oh no you wont you'll get a proper mechanic to look at it.

Apparently there was a piece on Wave FM (Hampshire) this morning by Shireen Jordan about the Bournemouth Air Show and how lucky they were to be having the Vulcan this year on both days. I have had a quick look but can't find a copy on their site. I didn't hear it in Brussels but my wife (at home in Gosport) did and said it was a good positive piece.
-
Yep, heard it myself....and it was repeated on each News item on the half hour this morning. So plenty of coverage. Wave are pretty good, I've been hassling them for years over XH558 and they've always mentioned her on air when I've emailed in!

I heard it also a couple of times - Interesting point this year is Wave are a sponsor of the Bournemouth Air Festival so I'd expect a lot more mentions of displays as the time gets closer. Previously they were somewhat circumspect and avoided mentioning much about the Festival (apart from the traffic) as a rival station was sponsoring it!

This from the Shoreham website - latest news
"3rd time lucky for the Vulcan?
We hope that Avro Vulcan B2 will be able to put in appearances on both days of the Shoreham Airshow in 2012. We cannot deny that we have been very unlucky with weather and aircraft servicability in 2010 & 2011, but when the aircraft did appear in 2009 it quite simply brought the showground to a standstill.
2012 is a landmark year for the Vulcan. The type is celebrating 60 years siince its first flight and it is also the 30th Anniversary of the Falklands War in which the RAF’s last active Vulcans saw their only combat in the Black Buck series of operartions. The Vulcan to the Sky Trust’s Chief Pilot Martin Withers was the captain of the Vulcan that performed the first Black Buck raid which damaged the runway at Port Stanley rendering unusable for the Argentine fast jets.
Fingers crossed the weather plays balls for the return of the Vulcan howl over Sussex!"
and so say all of us :D :D

557 was an interesting Vulcan, as she was fitted with 201s, then went to Filton at one point and had a 301 fitted in one of the wings, then a while later a second one in the same wing so they could test the intake arrangements, before finally the other two on the other side swapped out.

Just seen an article on Look North about 558,some interesting points from Messrs Edmondson and Pleming, mixed messages again requesting funding for 2013 and then the carrot dangling of further investigation into the possibility of extending the flying life of 558.Taff was busy as ever inspecting an engine bay, looks like they are swapping out an ECU,it would be nice to know from the Trust the exact FI that is left on the airframe (in simple easy to understand terms) and the cycles left on the ECU's and how the possible modification would tie in with these two figures with regards to extending the flying life !

Some of us are professional moaners on the Echo website, purely as a caricature of the other regulars, most of whom are too daft to see that half the contributers are actually making fun of the other half whose inane comments are genuine stupidity rather than sarcasm...

Oops.....another story published in the press { and it was discussed on other aviation fora earlier last week as well } before the VTST have the chance to make their "official announcement" about it !!
And before anyone has a go at me for criticising VTST , it's the opposite -- the press and whoever was responsible for giving out the info on other fora before VTST have formally announced it are the ones who deserve criticism.
-
It was on 558s FB page last Thursday so I can only assume it was the VTST who posted the info as it said all will be revealed on 21st
-
All it has on Facebook as far as I can tell is what was posted in the last newsletter -- the logo & "Don't let me die, I wanna fly..all will be revealed on 21.03.2013"
In other words , less than what the newspaper article revealed & conciderably less than various posters put on other fora { although it's hard to check in one case , as it was on the recently-deleted XH558 topic on UKAR }
-
I haven't seen the news paper report but what I meant was you can't expect to post a photo on FB and keep the info back. A pretty distinctive logo so a little detective work would lead you to the group concerned.

I see the usual suspects couldn't wait to have a go in the Echo.
I wonder which part of "XH 558 is not government funded, is not owned by the RAF, is the peoples aircraft - only you can make it happen" they don't understand?
I realise life in Bournemouth can be a bit slow but some of those people need to get out more.
And no I don't know anything about "knock out Kaine" either.
-
Hope it means the Vulcan's volume goes up to 11 this year!
-
Heard on BBC Radio 4 'Today' programme that interest in engineering is increasing in UK schools. Lots of examples were quoted but not a word about aviation. Tried to find something on the BBC website to send a comment in but there's nothing in the news pages, including the science and technology section.
I'll just send a comment about the item to make sure they are aware of XH558's contribution to inspire engineering in the UK's youth.

Nice article, well done Lee.

Good to see trustee Gerald Howarth wearing his Vulcan lapel badge on ITN national news tonight.
-
As he did on every other show he was on today { and a big thumbs-up to him for referring to the Union Flag by it's proper name } :D
-
Just watching the local East Midlands news and as part of the round up of Maggie's local involvement they showed about 20 seconds of her visit to Bruntingthorpe to visit the vulcan in 2007, her last visit to the east Midlands.

Their website also has 558 in their main cover pic. http://www.cleethorpesairshow.co.uk (http://www.cleethorpesairshow.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
Not officially announced by them yet - they are going to publish the aircraft display list sometime today.

that's a pretty good article.
-
I disagree! The article is thoroughly misleading. It reads as if the funding for the lifetime extension has already been found, thus will do nothing for fundraising/pledge efforts.
Trust Admin Edit: Agreed, we are on to them!!!

Any publicity is good publicity. We expect the press to get details wrong these days.

Hmm.
Took nearly two whole hours before the first negative comment suggesting someone else should pay for us to keep flying.
I love the support we get from the Echo but i do wonder about the negative vibes that come in from most of their correspondents.
Of course if I were being cynical (which I usually am) I may think that is exactly why they are so keen to publish articles about us ;)
-
Most amusing coverage in the pseudo media I've seen recently was a couple of days ago on the RAF Facebook topic about the Queen's birthday flypast: one correspondent had obviously been half following all the news outputs from the Trust and declared that 558 couldn't participate in the birthday flypast because she was in Rome having her wings inspected for strenthening!!

I hope all those whiners really enjoy having a moan about the amount of coverage the Vulcan gets in the Echo as I get the feeling they are going to be hearing a lot more about us in the near future ;)
By the way, is it me or do the same people always moan? (of course it might always be the same people who put them straight as well - with sort of familiar user names!)
-
You lot moving south then?

I just love the mention at the piece end --- "fly until 2015 and hopefully after, dependant on funding". (:-)

Well said, and Bryan too ;D
The trolls must have been getting worried they were not going to get a response - and then they got two barrels ;)
Hope to see some of you up at Doncaster over the winter.....

also another piece in Mailonline this morning . Some picture were the same as yesterday , but some new fantastic head on aerial ones from Andy Rouse photography . Sadly his copyright are across the pictures . Wondering if this was organised by the trust for forthcoming book ?
