Thanks for the replies.

Posted it to Twitter as well and someone suspects it might be triple four?

Which I think ended up as one of the 'display flight' aircraft (certainly I have found a picture of it at Greenham Common, I assume for the airshow?) but I don't think 444 saw any action in the Falklands.

It's always fun finding out the story behind these pictures.

Thanks for the replies, and we figured it was 'MoD Plod' and I didn't think it would be 607 but was worth pursuing that angle just in case.

Don't have much more in the way of details sadly but I'll see if Craig might be able to shed additional light on it.

Maybe someone else will recognise it and be able to fill in some more of the blanks?

This picture was sent to me by one of our Local Radio Amateurs.

He is fairly certain it was taken at RAF Waddington.

Does anyone have any more information they can shed on it?

He has no idea which Vulcan it is, but he did think it had been on a bombing run to the Falklands so possibly XM607 ?

It is a sad day of course, but as others have said this sort of thing is always a possibility not to far away when you are dealing with such powerful engines (basically a rocket motor), it is only with people such as these test pilots that we can have the excellent safety record that most forms of transport go on to have.

It will obviously be a set back (as with the 2 shuttle disasters) but ultimately lessons will be learned and I'm sure the project will go onto completion.

These test pilots would be the first to acknowledge that what they do carries an known risk which they always try to minimise.

It would be even sadder IMHO if the project failed just because of this incident.

Not directly Vulcan related but contains some Falklands related material so might be of interest.

Tessa Dunlop reveals an untold story from the Falklands war, the desperate struggle to communicate the fateful message to sink the cruiser General Belgrano. How was the order to attack the Argentinian battleship somehow sent 8,000 miles to the submarine, HMS Conqueror, submerged deep underwater?

Could be worth a watch?

Likewise I'm grateful, a VERY informative article.

I've e-mailed it to "our friend" Tom Small who is currently undergoing some practical flight training (in Sunny Arizona!) to become a commercial airline pilot. I hope he and the others on the course will get something from it as well.

Some cracking shots, especially the second one that looks like 558 is "parked" a top the keep.

I do wonder if the trust and/or Scarborough Town Council would like to make a "postcard" out of it (and the thrid pic of XH558 over the houses?)

I'm sure they'd sell, and would help XH558 and the town?

So they could extend the flying program to accommodate the "overwhelming response from overseas air arms" but they could not find an 8 minute slot for us.......

I wonder what the advance ticket sales will look like next January.

I thought the 'reason' was lack of parking space due to so many multi-aircraft display teams hogging all the available places?

"Parking" can't be the reason as they offered XH558 a "static" slot when the displays were full up?

The trust dismissed this option immediately and rightly so IMHO.

Forget the advanced ticket sales for 2015, I for one will NOT be attending RIAT 2014, (and know a number of others of the same mind) and hope their gate figures are well down on last year as XH558 is not attending.

They could have an actual alien UFO and I still wouldn't go after this fiasco.

Maybe when they have their "quietst year ever", they might realise what the Vulcan actually does to airshow attendance figures?

I will also give RIAT a miss this year, very sad day, and I FULLY endorse the descision to not even go as a static.

Maybe some (home made? - as a kind of protest?) signs on the approach roads saying "NO VULCAN @ RIAT" on the approach roads might save some disapointed visitors?

I wonder if this would be the "done thing" though, similarly we COULD use this to generate extra air time for XH558 on TV and Radio? "RIAT rejects Vulcan" etc? but again that might be deemed undesireable?

I realise it's been a while since this topic was active but I thought people might like an update...

Tom Small, is just as brilliant as he comes across on the programme, he is a fine addition to our local team, he has a passion for flying (and XH558 of course) that is just amazing, but we have lost him for this flying season as he is training to become a commercial pilot.

Having acheived 90+% in all his theory exams he is currently spending 6 months doing flight training in Arizona.

I'm sure he'll be missing XH558 as much as we'll be missing him in the team, but it is good to see him another step closer to his dream job.

I'm sure everyone will wish him all the best in pursuit of this, and he will be back with us by around September.

We will need a 100W PA System with a Bass Reflex Cabinet to give our supporters a taste of XH558 at our events when they donate money !!
 ;D ;D ;D

I have something that might do the trick...but you'd need an extra car to ship it to each show.....its 200W per channel and 20hz-20khz

Looking at the first picture of the stenciled bucket (and the reflection in the logo) I thought you'd cut a hole in the top of the bucket....

The parts to make the bucket "howl" are easily obtained, the tricky part is arranging the "switch" (in my case some tin foil) in the coin opening so that when a coin is dropped it trigers the sound.

I have just aquired enough parts to modify another 5 or so buckets and am refining the design so it can be easily retrofitted to any collecting bucket.

I have an external speaker socket on the bucket (the internal 0.5W speaker is ok but not good enough IMHO) so we can use a bigger speaker or amplifier with the system. I have also modified one bucket so it can be driven off USB (or any 4.5v-5V source really) and the button cells don't last very long. I invisage longer term using AA or AAA batteries.
