Book / Film / TV Reviews / James May: The Reassembler
« on: April 05, 2016, 07:46:50 AM »
Brilliant stuff!

You can't beat a bit of 'Men In Sheds' and James May is slowly becoming Jack Hargreaves in this three part series.
For those of us with an engineering bent I can recommend it!

Here's Part one where he reassembles a Suffolk Punch, petrol, lawn mower.

(There's a Telephone and an electric guitar to come in the next two parts)

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Aviation Waffle / New Russian Jets.
« on: July 10, 2014, 01:10:48 PM »
Just got this in one of my aviation group emails and thought some of our folk might be interested..

--- cut ---

You have to wonder how they achieve attitude control at zero or negative forward airspeed.  Obviously the jet has the required thrust to weight to accelerate vertically from zero or low negative airspeeds, the key is keeping that thrust vector vertical.   Think it would be best to shoot that aircraft down from a long way off.

Pay particular attention to how close they get to the ground in some of the maneuvers.

Check this guy at 48 seconds into the video – almost on the ground and completely vertical.

Amazing. Note that they stop vertically and then accelerate vertically.

WOWZER! I never knew about the connection between the first Alien Movie starship Nostromo and the Vulcan.
Much as I'm probably late to this party I thought I'd share.

There's a documentary about the film called "The Alien Saga" from 2002 in which Ridley Scott tells us that to kit out the Nostromo he bought two old Vulcan aircraft and tore them up for parts.

Aviation Waffle / Almost launch time for Falcon 9
« on: September 29, 2013, 04:44:33 PM »
You can watch the launch live at the link below at around 17:00 BST   ;D

http://www.spacex.com/webcast/

They have cameras on the launch vehicle pinting up and down so you'll see Californai get smaller from the rocket and then they'll switch to UP to get a look as they enter space.  8)
