General Photography Discussion / Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill
« on: April 30, 2013, 05:26:14 PM »
Just been reading this on the Pentax Forum :
http://photothisandthat.co.uk/2013/04/29/is-the-uk-government-trying-to-kill-of-photographers/
Also : http://www.bjp-online.com/british-journal-of-photography/news/2264780/controversial-copyright-framework-receives-royal-assent

It's a new Act that the Govt. are trying to bring in -- the "Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Bill" , which allows all work considered to be an orphan work to get used for free. Orphan works are those works whose creator cannot be found.
No problem ??
Well , yes.....If you upload a photo to most { if not all } social media sites & some of the photography sites , they automatically strip-out much/all of the EXIF data. As such , these images could be classed as 'orphan' because there's no proof of who took them.
Unless , of course , you use some form of watermarking on the image or register it elsewhere.

Just to say I tried to donate 3 times by phone on the given number in the Vulcan to the Sky E-mail that they send out each tuesday and friday.
All I got was a voice saying that the attendants were unavailable at this time.
I left a message for them to call back but as at 7:34 on a sunny monday morning I still havent had a reply.

Ways To Raise Funding / "Double your donation" query
« on: April 18, 2013, 03:45:50 PM »
An interesting point has been raised on UKAR { Edited & reworded slightly for clarification } :

The "Double your Donation" offer is valid until midnight on Friday - 19th April.
But is that 00.01 hrs on the Friday morning, or 00.01 hrs Saturday morning ?

Anyone ??

General Photography Discussion / Excessive use of Photoshop
« on: March 21, 2013, 09:43:32 AM »
The winner of one of Britain’s most prestigious photographic competitions was stripped of his title recently because of excessive use of Photoshop.

Any opinions ??
{ Some of you will probably know what mine are !!  ;)  }

Book / Film / TV Reviews / ANZACS
« on: March 01, 2013, 04:45:06 PM »
After many years , I've finally managed to get hold of this classic 1985 series on DVD !!
OK , the subtitles are in Dutch (  :o  ) but the audio's in English.

Just have to wait until my days off next week { when I can watch the whole 8 or so hour series in one go } to see if it's as good as I remember.

Ways To Raise Funding / Online Store 'wall posters'......

Posters # 2 & # 4........
Why , oh why , produce posters of XH558 in flight with the ends of one wing "cut off" ??  :o
Was it really too difficult to show the complete aircraft !!

{ Sorry......just one of the things that bugs me when people produce photos of aircraft }

Book / Film / TV Reviews / The Sweeney
« on: February 11, 2013, 03:35:25 PM »
Well , I've watched it on DVD { twice , for reasons I'll explain }
Some good , some bad.....
For those who've seen the original films & series , it probably would have been better if they'd made it as a "new generation" with different characters , rather than just trying to update a classic.
Too many plot flaws , especially events that happen with no explanation or no conclusion.
Your obligatory shoot-outs with pistols which hardly ever need reloading { except , of course , at critical points of the plot }
People getting a "good kicking" / shot / stabbed , then are running around right as rain 5 minutes later.

Saying that , it was enjoyable......managed to fit in most of the things you'd expect in the original Sweeney -- dodgy coppers , dodgy pubs , dodgy East-End villains & snouts , car chases , shoot-outs , gratuitous violence & a bit of sex !!

Why did I watch it twice ??
Quite simply to try & spot all the homages { often one-liners } to the original Sweeney , and to an early Ray Winston film -- 'Scum'.

Did laugh at the final car chase.......definitely more Comic Strip { 'detectives on the edge of a nervous breakdown' } than 'Sweeney' !!  :lol:

Book / Film / TV Reviews / Pathetic BBC & Sky News { again }
« on: February 11, 2013, 02:51:24 PM »
So........
Explosion at a coal mine in Russia kills 18....
Car bomb in Syria kills at least 7.....
SAR-Op in Cairngorms for missing climbers { 1 dead , 5 rescued }.....

Yet what have BBC News24 & Sky News been waffling on about for the last few hours , to the exclusion of everything else ??
The fact that The Pope is retiring at the end of the month !!  :evil:
Some people really need a sense of perspective !!  :roll:

Aviation Waffle / Supporting Vampire WZ507
« on: February 10, 2013, 10:09:32 PM »
From a topic on the UKAR forum by Matt Hampton , Chief Pilot of the Vampire Preservation Group:
http://forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=49743
Quote :
WZ507 is currently grounded, pending a major maintenance inspection which we hope to complete in time for the summer. Every 8 years a major inspection is required and 2013 is the year this is scheduled... An average year sees expenditure of over £20000 to keep WZ507 flying; this year the figure will be even higher due to the cost of this inspection.

If you would like to help keep WZ507 flying, any support would be hugely appreciated. There are two easy ways to help -

1) Membership of the supporters club - this starts from just £1 per month and is the ideal way to keep up to date with all our news and maybe visit the aircraft for a guided tour! Details here:
http://www.vampirepreservation.org.uk/supporters.htm

2) Alternatively, maybe you could be interested in buying the new Airfix model of WZ507 from our online shop? This is a great little model of our Vampire and every kit we sell helps fund WZ507's future. Details here:
http://www.vampirepreservation.org.uk/shop-gifts.htm

Thank you in advance - hopefully you'll see WZ507 flying again soon!

Aviation Waffle / RAF St Athan 75th anniversary
« on: February 07, 2013, 01:08:36 PM »
Noticed this on the PPRuNe Forum today :
http://www.pprune.org/military-aircrew/507266-st-athans-75th-anniversary.html
Quote :
St Athan airfield will be celebrating its 75th anniversary on July 9th 2013 and they will be carrying out a flypast of all types of aircraft or personnel that may have had links to the base. At the moment there is a Hornet Moth, Pembroke and Beech 18 and maybe some others from hunter Flying. If anyone else would like to participate they can contact Jane Bissett on 01446797118

{ Emphasis in bold is mine }
So.......dare I ask...... ??

Book / Film / TV Reviews / Any "Folkies" out there ??
« on: February 05, 2013, 05:18:41 PM »
Go on , I can't be the only one on here who enjoys listening to folk music ??
If there are , anyone listen to it on Radio 2 ??
If so , what's your opinion of their recent move in binning Mike Harding & replacing his show with one by Mark Radcliffe ??
My opinion ?? .......Baaad move !!  :roll:
Sorry , but despite his claimed 'folk' background , Radcliffe just doesn't cut it.
Tried my best to give it a chance , but I still don't like his show.
Sorry , his presenting style is out of keeping with the "folk style" { rushes his words , lots of 'ums' , 'ahs' , 'errs' & loud gasps for breath } -- the bloke needs to relax more !! Plus he spends too much time when interviewing guests trying to be funny & making poor jokes.
Oh , and seeing as how the BBC supposedly doesn't do advertising { other than their own annoyingly repetetive ones every 10 minutes or so !! } , just how many times can he get away with playing the same songs ?? { And I don't really like 'Bellowhead' & 'The Unthanks' anyway }

Aviation Waffle / Those poor passengers !!
« on: January 28, 2013, 12:47:22 PM »
There they were thinking they were heading for Heathrow , but instead they end up diverting to Cardiff !!  :P
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-21232826
Somewhat confused story , though : BA said the pilot noticed a "potential minor technical problem" while the airport said the jet diverted "under a full emergency"

On another note........138 pax -- being a 747-400 , that would make it at most about 30% full .... not exactly cost-effective , is it !!

Aviation Waffle / Swansea Airshow 2013
« on: January 26, 2013, 02:10:10 PM »
The only Airshow in South Wales , Swansea hosts the Wales National Air Show every 2 years.
As usual , it falls on the same weekend as Yeovilton { 13th & 14th July this year }
Now for the last 2 Airshows , I've E-Mailed them to enquire whether or not they planned to book XH558......both times they've opted to book other aircraft instead.
Given that 2013 may be the last flying year for XH558 , I've again asked the question , this time on their Facebook page  http://www.facebook.com/WalesNationalAirShow
Let's see what answer I get.
Maybe if more people ask about / request XH558 they may have a change of heart this year.

{ Oh , and I still don't do Facebook.......I got one of my friends to post it for me !!  :lol:  }
