Aviation Waffle / Manston Airport
« on: April 10, 2014, 01:17:42 PM »
Never mind there being no airshow this year, it looks like there won't be an airport either.  KLM have pulled out with effect from today, leaving no scheduled flights whatsoever:-

XL231 will be performing a fast taxy run on Sunday 3pm at Elvington airfield.  The plan was to stream the 'chute, but since it's probably going to rain it's unlikely to happen.  Still, a fast taxy in wet conditions should be worth seeing.

Access is via the Museum (with £8 charge I assume, unless there's a concession).

Aviation Waffle / Concorde Crash - Continental cleared
« on: November 29, 2012, 02:47:07 PM »
Continental Airlines has finally been cleared of causing the Concorde crash - by a French court.  Anyone who has seen any of the documentaries about it will know that there was strong evidence that it was already veering off the runway before it hit the metal strip and was heavily overweight.

This verdict is long overdue.

Aviation Waffle / VC10 Retirement Flypast
« on: August 23, 2012, 03:22:17 PM »
Quote from: "Royal Air Force"
The Royal Air Force's venerable VC10, the air-to-air refueller, will be conducting a final flypast of RAF Stations in the UK on 28 August 2012. The aircraft will then go into retirement.

The 'queen of the skies', will be conducting a final flypast of all the RAF bases in the UK before being retired from service on the 28th August 2012. 3 VC10's will flypast Lossiemouth, timings to be confirmed, before heading onto RAF Leuchars.
To confirm an important point, the VC10 isn't being retired on 28th August.  This is just the date of the flypast.  The retirement is March 2013.

...the VC10's will be conducting refuelling training over the North Sea and then taking the opportunity to flypast the RAF bases which will be training for the Navigator to ensure he gets there on time with right amount of fuel remaining. Gareth Williams is right in that the they are not out of service on the 28th August just taking an ideal opportunity to do the flypast with end of C1K ops. RAF Lossiemouth is looking forward to seeing them on their flypast!

Aviation Waffle / First RAF F35 Drops Bomb

Quote from: "Royal Air Force"
The United Kingdom's first stealth fighter has dropped a bomb for the first time. The Lightning dropped a 1,000 lb bomb in the USA, which was another successful milestone in the delivery of the aircraft.

They don't state if they hit the target or whether there were any casualties, nor whether follow up sorties will be required...

What I suspect was a Typhoon above the clouds at Church Fenton.  Was making a lot of noise, but rather frustratingly I couldn't see it :?
