Book / Film / TV Reviews / "A Great British Air Disaster"
« on: April 29, 2013, 08:46:29 PM »
Just had a re-run of the recent Channel 4 documentary “A Great British Air Disaster” which looked at the tragic 1954 losses of Comet “Yoke Peter” and “Yoke Yoke”.
Whilst much of it concentrated on the work of Arnold Hall and his team and their pioneering approach to air accident investigation, what really impressed me was the work of Roger Topp and his colleagues.
Topp, a graduate of the Empire Test Pilots School was pivotal in taking the Comet back into the air and into the unknown to try and find out what happened.
These aircraft (at the cutting edge of passenger aviation) are grounded after multiple, catastrophic losses and Topp and his team of flight engineers proceed to rack up a hundred plus flights trying deliberately to provoke it into some form of problem. They take the nice aeroplane and poke it repeatedly and increasingly severely with a large aerodynamic stick… Arnold Hall may well have given us the principles and methods that underpin modern air accident techniques but Roger Topp and his flight team (in the era before cockpit voice and flight data recorders) stood up and said “We need to know what happened, lets’ see what we can learn by doing”. Deeply impressive stuff and respect is due.

I know I'm not. And I know Taff and his team are not. Those that do are free to leave at anytime...

Engineering / ADS-B?
« on: May 31, 2011, 12:53:39 PM »
Just wondering if any thought had been given to fitment of an ADS-B transmitter to 558? Don't know how much they cost or whether they are an allowable fit to a non commercial transport aircraft. But in terms of helping to raise her profile it would be nice to be able to track her movements on a computer or 3G 'phone...
