As you probably remember myself and others were frequent contributors to this and many other forums throughout the restoration and I always did my level best to pass on as much engineering information and progress updates as I physically had the opportunity to.

This was in fact one of the main areas that both Andrew and Robert said they would like me to focus on when offering me a position in the team for the flying phase.


A real blast from the past! Good to hear you're still lurking around Ron.

Your postings were one of the highlights of the old-old-old (is that enough times?) forum! I certainly learned more from them about the technical side of the jet than from anywhere else, and always looked forward to your replies to questions. I even still have some of them squirrelled away in a Notepad document somewhere!

Ah, the old days of the hangar-cams, yellow or silver wheel rims, not to mention the bomb-bay pannier!

In answer to Sam's original question - I would support and contribute to any scheme which meant she could keep flying, even if it was in the USA.

I would have thought the suggestion that it will avoid being hit by a cross-wind would not be correct!

Depending how far around the circle it is necessary to travel on approach, surely you are guaranteed to encounter a cross-wind, whichever direction the wind is blowing from!  ???

Insiders now confirm that the Red Arrows traditional aerobatic display at Farnborough has been dropped due to safety fears from RAF top brass...

Great to see you posting again Ron, and thank you for such a reasoned (as always!) post - that, more than any other explanation I've read, has convinced me that sadly, the time is right for 558 to retire.

Seeing you posting has brought things full circle, and takes me back to the exciting days of the restoration, the hangar cams, and regular updates from the team working on 558.  Such a shame all that has been lost over several changes to the forum software.

Well what an amazing day! Very impressed with the reborn Church Fenton.

558's display was one of the best I've seen, and the formation with the Gnats was very moving - especially the "missing man" flypast in memory of Kevin Whyman - which brought spontaneous applause from everyone.

All in all, a very good day - well done to the whole team who have resurrected Church Fenton airdisplay (which along with the annual trip to Finningley is one of my happiest childhood memories).

I'd second that! We've just got home from a fantastic day at Coventry, the highlight of which was obviously 558's display. The whole day was underpinned with "will she / won't she" and frantic checking of Twitter!

Thank you so much to the guys at Finningley who worked so hard to patch her up for today - it was appreciated by everyone there today - witness the sustained round of applause after 558 climbed away from her display.

Thanks for that Wizzy, so can anybody confirm that "They had been about to use the blow-down, when on the final attempt it locked down." ? meaning under the normal power, which is easier to sort than a "dead-leg".
My understanding from what Pod said to me was that the procedure specifies how many times to raise and lower the leg under normal power, and after that number of attempts you should use the nitrogen blow-down.  The blow-down is a last resort.  Upon performing the last of the scheduled lowering attempts (under normal power), the log locked into place.

Their feeling was that it was most likely to be air in the system, and that once up on jacks back at Finningley, it should be a relatively straight-forward fix for the engineers.

We were at Ayr on Saturday, and watched her display from the beach.  She completed an excellent display, including a nice power-climb at the end, and departed to land at Prestwick.  We assumed that was it.  A few minutes later we saw her go around and make another approach.  We assumed she had just made a single pass prior to landing.  She was flying along with what I thought from that distance was the BBMF Hurricane (but others have reported was their Spitfire), so we thought it was probably for a photo shoot.

She appeared making another approach, and looking through binoculars (we were on the beach a couple of miles away), I could see her nose leg was at about 45 degrees, not vertical.

She made another approach, and looked to raise then attempt to lower the undercarriage again.  It was obvious something was wrong, although at that point there was nothing official being said.  The announcer on the PA said that there was "an air traffic issue" at Prestwick, and nothing could take off at the moment.

We watched, and after a few more attempts, the leg came down fine, then she landed.  The air-display then carried on as planned.

We managed to talk to Pod later on, and asked him about the incident.  He said that the leg hadn't locked down, so they had raised and lowered it the requisite number of times, as per procedure.  They had been about to use the blow-down, when on the final attempt it locked down.  The Hurricane flying along side was observing, to let them know how the leg looked.  Leg down, landed safely, with plenty of aerodynamic braking to save any stress on the nose leg until the last minute.  No panic, just very professional following of procedures, as you would expect!  Well done Pod, Bill and Phil.
