If only to mark the fact that 'Mr Grumpy-Pants' has broken his silence :o I will join him in expressing thanks to our brilliant engineers.

I just wonder that if we have been given a little more notice, or just the option, people would have been willing to donate that little bit more to retain one or two of them during the hibernation.

Regarding 163's engines - how many do we have, what's their condition, and what's their expected lifespan?

It came right over us about 20 mins before.  Too dark to see, but unmistakable.

Hi Tim,

If you are thinking of volunteers who have given their time, then yes, I think that is also the plan.
It is a list of names and nothing more... and there will be time for people to check, or for others to write in and say that perhaps, 'such and such' deserves to be on.

As it mentions, it's a bit of a mammoth task...
Not volunteers - I was just thinking about those people who had been members of the club.  A fair proportion of their subs would have have been donated to the Trust.

I suspect it doesn't, but would this include Club members who have given indirectly, but possibly never directly?  Just anticipating the gripes from those who have done this.

Well done to all those Vulcan Scrubbers. Your efforts were very apparent at all the airshows. Only wish I'd been able to join in, but what with work, a baby girl & back surgery I always found an excuse to stay at home :)

Indeed.  No amount of getting angry, lobbying politicians & companies, signing petitions or involving Royals & celebrities is going to make any difference.

Sure, she could theoretically go on for a few more years, but the unknowns make it too much of a risk.  The experts have made their assessments based on all available evidence and it's time to call it a day gracefully while she is ahead, before something unexpected happens. Hands up those who'd like to see her end on a technical issue or after some sort of emergency...

Incidentally, I did see some photos of the wing spars of another well-known Vulcan recently, and it's fair to say that it was 'quite bent'.  Not that this means that 558 is the same, but she is not immune to fatigue.

I've accepted it's time to say farewell.  Time we all did, I think.

I think John Shuttleworth  would say.

....but Ken it's crazy!... we can't have TWO Vulcans on the go that can only taxy due to a load of red tape..It's a nightmare scenario! .

I will do the gig but I want my own private car parking space and an assurance that Doncaster police won't attempt to 'lock down' the whole of West Yorkshire if it might get a bit busy etc.
... plus free and unfettered use of the tea urn.

I don't think even the mighty John Shuttleworth (Sheffield's funniest man, no less) could keep 558 flying.

'Ooof - Ken, what do you reckon? A fundraiser at the Doncaster Dome to raise a few quid for a rebuild?'

'Don't be silly, John. Have you been overdosing on those Werther's Originals again?'

They probably read some of your forum posts and assessed you as a 'significant threat to the public peace'.  C:-) C:-) C:-)
