PS.  The CAA restriction is on vintage *jet* aircraft.  I doubt a prop-driven aircraft would have been much less destructive in the same circumstances.

Seeing as how the Vulcan is older than the Hunter then I can't see how it wouldn't.

Some years ago I was passing Shoreham on a Sunday at this time of year when all the traffic came to a halt at those traffic lights for no apparent reason.  I heard engines and looked up to see three WW2 fighters diving straight at us in formation, so close I could see the leading pilots face.  Given the rules regarding flight line and crowd lines I couldn't believe they allowed aircraft to fly so low over a major road, much less that they still could - if the Hunter was on the flight line.

So Bill couldn't have been flying the Vulcan with a Red 11 helmet?

"Bill wears the white helmet with Red Arrow and appropriately enough the "11" on the rear of it as team boss."

I understood Bill was 'Red 10' when he was with them, wouldn't the '11' make him an honorary additional member rather than team boss?

A superb display on Saturday following a spectacular take-off!  An excellent day all round (apart from listening to the first 90 minutes of the displays on the radio ...)

(Why is what attachments this finally posts so random?)

... for a fantastic weekend of appearances.  We were at Wellesbourne so quite early in the flight and the pilot apologised for the limited display, but it was still great to see and hear.

Engineering / Weekends away

For events like Fairford where the Vulcan is there over several days, taking off and landing, does she stay overnight?  Or go back home?  If staying overnight how many of Taff and co have to be there for the pre-flight checks, fuelling and starting procedures?  Also do you have to take your own starting equipment with you, or is there suitable kit on site?

And a supplementary flight crew related rather than engineering.  Last weekend I noticed (but didn't get the opportunity to enquire) that Bill Ramsey and Martin Withers up front were wearing what looked like leg straps under their knees, but Phil Davies in the rear cockpit wasn't.  Are they something to do with ejection procedures?  Or just to stop things falling through holes in pockets onto the floor?

Wife was on a Power on Experience Sunday 21st while I was on the mound.  Couldn't believe it when a surveillance Islander declared an emergency with a puncture and came to a halt in the middle of the runway just before takeoff.  The fire crews checked it out, and I was concerned that the takeoff might be cancelled as 558 was already waiting on the taxyway burning fuel.  But eventually the Islander taxyed off followed by the tenders, then a check of the whole runway had to be done.  She got off about 40 minutes late, with Bicester having to be cancelled because of the fuel lost.

I think that he is trying to make the point that he has got bigger engines to play with than 558's  ;D

It't a "bloke" thing !!!! Mines bigger than yours :))

Oh dear.  Another example of the 'inverse law' where some blokes feel the need a big flashy car, perhaps.

The bad news is I can't make it this year  :(

The good news is that it's because I shall be at Finningley for a Power On  ;D

The bad news is we could only get one place and I have donated it to my wife  >:(

Hi Bovril - we just turned up on a Saturday morning in April last year and Bob was excellent, even teenaged granddaughter was impressed.  It was my birthday yesterday and daughter who is also a fan had got me a 558 engine bolt in a presentation box - very nice  :)

It's only taken me a month and at least a dozen emails to get on here since joining the club.

Why is it so difficult?  And why isn't the actual process you have to go through given to you at the outset?  References to 'username' and 'control panel' are no help when there is nothing to tell you how to create the former or find the latter!

Also some of my emails went unanswered or just elicited a question mark, which isn't helpful.

I've been supporting financially for a while now, but I remember when making my first donation reading that new donors would receive an email response, and I didn't get that either.  Nor a response to a technical question about one externally visual aspect of XH558, that had to wait for a superb tour of XM655 inside and out.

The level of care given to XH558 and the quality of the flying displays, particularly last year, are superb.  With the exception of one person who made several attempts and finally got me registered this process has left me rather disillusioned.
