Ways To Raise Funding / Loughborough Help Needed Sunday URGENT
« on: November 08, 2011, 12:04:57 PM »
We have been given permission to distribute 'Salute' leaflets at Loughborough on Sunday at the Queens Park Parade. It is from 10.30 onwards.

David Lee-Williams has got the leaflets but what is URGENTLY needed is manpower to help distribute them.

If you can help please contact DLW on 07760803922 or by pm or email

David has been in contact with the Mayor of Loughborough who, in a very nice letter, is happy to support us in this and wishes us well with the fundraising to keep 558 flying.

PLEASE PLEASE come and help David and 558 if you can.

This will not in any way be allowed to impact on the solemn nature of the day, and will be conducted away from the central events, as in to people leaving the event.

Photo Competitions / 2011 Photo competition NOW CLOSED
« on: November 05, 2011, 12:28:15 PM »
I have now closed down the topics involved.

I would like to thank Andy for all his hard work in setting up and running this competition. It has raised a considerable sum towards XH558.

I would also like to say what an incredible range of photographs have been submitted and judging this year is going to be very difficult. Well done to everyone who has entered.

Now on with the judging! :D

Ways To Raise Funding / LINCOLN MARKET Latest
« on: November 02, 2011, 05:40:01 PM »
In just TWO WEEKS time we will be ready to go to Lincoln for the Christmas market.

We need some more volunteers to help run the stand even if its just for a day or half a day.

This is a good winter fundraiser and a reminder to people of the Vulcan during the winter months.

It is good fun to do and although it can be cold/wet/windy/snowy/etc we still enjoy meeting the people.

We will be having special visitors too like Martin Withers and some of the ground crew.

If you would like to help please get in touch as soon as possible. Either pm me or email in the first instance.

You will enjoy it :D

Ways To Raise Funding / Press Conference 5th October
« on: October 06, 2011, 10:28:13 AM »
Malcolm and I had the pleasure of going to the Press conference at the RAF Club yesterday in the presence of Prince Michael of Kent. It was attended by people from all areas of XH558's survival and by members of assorted aviation and media publications.

Robert Pleming and Ken Smart gave an excellent presentation on the history of the aircraft and the Salute to Her Majesty. This has already resulted in one press release in the Mirror and will hopefully be a feature of many more.

Both Malcolm and I met Prince Michael and I gave him a Club badge and Malcolm gave him a Vulcan pin. He said he was impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication of the supporters in all they do to keep XH558 flying.

We were also able to tell the Trust and Prince Michael that the Club now has 6044 memberships, which, if you think half of those could be Family or joint memberships with at least 2 or 3 members each, would make our membership potentially around the 10,000!!!! Thank you to all of you who make this club the best and probably the biggest aviation supporters club in the world (imo anyway!! ;)  :D )

I hope to be able to get a couple of pictures later. The RAF Club in Piccadilly is a fabulous building with wall to wall aviation art and busts of famous aviators including Roy Chadwick and a fabulous painting of a victor and XM607 on the Black Buck raid. Wonderful place!

Next year will be a fantastic year with hopefully plenty to look forward to so keep doing what we in the Club do best and keep 558 up there in the skies where she belongs.

Thank you all for your support :D  :D

Former Aircrew / Another XH558 pilot
« on: September 15, 2011, 10:57:12 AM »
I spoke to you on the Saturday of the Waddington weekend, about how my Dad has flown XH558.  I believe that my partner already gave you his name.  I copy directly below what my Dad wrote to me.  His name is Robin Wakelin.

"I flew in the aircraft on 25 May 1966 (initial conversion course at Finningley) and  on 24 January 1968 (Intermediate co-pilots course, again at Finningley, designed to qualify people for the first pilot's role and to operate in the LH seat).  Those were the only times.  According to my logbook during the latter flight I did a couple of high speed runs with and without the auto mach trim, steep turns, a diversion to St Mawgan, three precision approaches, one ILS approach, and five visual approaches, 3 hours 50 minutes in total, all at night"

After the vulcan dropped the bombs on Port Stanley runway, there is a high altitude photograph of the island showing the damage.

Who took the photograph???

Aviation Waffle / 1940's air crash of experimental Wellington
« on: July 30, 2011, 11:47:50 AM »
Just happened to be talking with a friend from a neighboring town about a flypast of a Hurricane over a local village recently and she mentioned a memorial service for an air crash that happened there. So I did a bit of a search and found this. ... r-oakwood/

The Hurricane was booked for their well dressing day at Stanley but also as a tribute and she says it was very moving.

Ways To Raise Funding / Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day 18th June
« on: June 16, 2011, 10:11:04 PM »
The Club have been invited to have a stand at Ryde on the Isle of wight this Saturday for their Armed Forces Day. Malcolm and I will be joined by Phill and members of Team Bournemouth to spread the word about XH558. We are staying with an ex-vulcan pilot which could be very interesting. One of our members on the island, Eric Chestnut, has been kind enough to arrange all our ferries and accommodation too. Thank you Eric. :D
Looking forward to it :D I've got my passport and Euro's ready!!

If you're in the vicinity come and say hello :D
