Sad news from Switzerland that a Junkers JU-52 HB-HOT - carrying 17 passengers and three crew on a sightseeing flight has crashed with no survivors.

It looks as though they have taken components of the RWR - Radio Warning Receiver (ARI-18228/1) and integrated them with a rotating antenna.

I can Identify the following (see anotated photo)

Control unit - 17172
Bearing indicator - 17171
Power Unit - 17203
Radio Receiver - 17170

The antenna could be made up of parts taken from the antennas installed on the top of the Vulcans tail - and installed in what appears to be a rotating head.

On the Vulcan there is one of these at each end of the tail fin assemble - one pointing forwards and the other to the rear.

The unit used the discriminated signal from these 2 antennas to work out from which direction the radiation came from and indicated it on the PPI - An audio out put was available on the intercom and the PRF was quite distinctly heard.

We also used Dialect at Saxa Vord in the 80s to assist with identifying incoming Soviet aircraft.

Indeed, RAF Halton is next for the chop I believe. I took my Dad to one of his reunion days there a while back. We took a walk around the WWI trenches there and were used for training purposes, hopefully these and the historic Halton house will be preserved.

Reaction times are quicker now due to the type of aircraft intended to be available, therefore a reduced need to have as many airfields as we used to. There is now more pressure on the retention of unused "real estate" when the sale of such would benefit the "public purse". 

There are some very important historic sites that have already been lost, and several of those where good intention has been expressed have drifted into obscurity.  The "few" now refers to those who are able to support and preserve such sites and artefacts, the "many" are those to whom we still owe so much.
