51Sqn Comets in the 50s/60s
« on: January 25, 2011, 09:18:29 PM »
One of my contacts on flickr asked me if I knew of this at Wyton.

Apparently one of 51sqn Comets caught fire in its hangar, because security was that tight around 51 access was limited to certain personel which didnt include the firemen. So when this thing went up the MPs wouldnt let them in to put the fire out.

Can anyone throw some light on this please  ;)

knowing 51s security I'm not surprised because 51 and its role were top secret and not officially admitted to exist until after the end of the Cold War..

I think you will find that it wasn't RAF Wyton when a Comet R Mk2 was destroyed in a hanger fire but at RAF Watton on 13 Sep 57.

here's an article that identifies the aircraft as XK633, I remember going on board '695 at Duxford around late '70s early '80s - sadly that one is also no more

that's my plans for the evening knackered! - started looking at the main spyflight website - very fascinating

already found an article about the comet operations: http://www.spyflight.co.uk/51sqn.htm
