Little query or two,, sorry:)
« on: September 27, 2011, 06:00:45 PM »
Ive just watched a video on FB of Kev and Bill Ramsey in the cockpit at Sunderland i think it was.
Anyway i couldn't make out which was Kev or Bill and it made me wonder, as you see both of them holding the throttle thing, does it matter which seat the actual pilot of the day sits in. Can he sit in either seat?  Also one of them was wearing a white helmet with the number 11 on is that of any significance?

I think I'm right in saying that the Captain sits in the left hand seat but both Captain and Co-Pilot have access to the same controls, makes sense I guess in case anything happens to either one.

The left hand seat is known generally as the Captains seat but didn't necessarily mean the captain was sitting in that seat. DT for instance being left handed actually like to sit in the right hand seat as the controls were in a more nature position but was happy to and did display from either seat.

Do I remember you once posting that a pilot gets authorised to perform his display from a particular seat?  If so, does that mean DT had two DAs?

Thanks Pam, i think thats what i was actually trying to ask.  If the controls are the same for both seats, do pilots have a favoured side?

You are talking about CAA rules when 558 first came back on the display circuit. No DT only displayed from the left hand seat in '08 and only had the one DA. The CAA where understandably very cautious and DT was the most current of display pilots at that time but even then it was 15 years since he had displayed. In service on the VDF because he was in current flying practice he would display from either seat. I have no idea if the rules have relaxed a little now 558 has been around a little while.

From a control perspective, both seats have the same functions, with the throttles in the middle. From a management point of view the left hand seat has engine start and other critical systems. Fuel management is between the seats. The instrumentation is slightly biased to the left. The Captain would normally sit on the left, however, when the copilot had completed the Interim Captains Course and qualified as a First Pilot, they would swap seats for different sorties. Unfortunately this all changed after the Malta crash, the copilot was flying from the left seat and misjudged the approach, this was considered a mitigating factor and thereafter only Captains sat on the left unless there was a QFI on the right
