This winter
« on: September 02, 2010, 02:43:59 PM »
Is there anything out of the very ordinary planned for the coming closed season?  Obviously there were the lamp apertures and the very costly spar mods to be done last time around, but I was wondering if there was anything significant coming this time around, and what sort of time/costs would be involved?  Is it 'simply' a good bit of TLC or are there some more major bits of work in the pipeline?

Nothing out of the ordinary is planned for this next winter servicing. It should last about 6 weeks, however, until I have planned it out, I can't give anything more accurate than that.  We are looking to add more inspections this winter, all to do with the early detection of stress corrosion cracking.  As we haven't done these before there will also be a degree of guesstimation inbuilt to the final servicing plan and the manhours needed to complete it.
We are not expecting to find anything as a result of these extra items we are adding, but it pays to be vigilant when you're dealing with a 50 year old bird.

Do you have a 'winter home' sorted yet?  I presume you'll want a roof over your heads for the servicing.

In view of the fact that she has landed at Lyneham. Do you know if this is the planned winter home or is this just an interim parking place?

Well you didn't say which display season.

If we don't get the money by the end of October 558 will have a permanent home, it will be a retirement home. :(

Sam does this mean that you Engineers are on one month's notice again like early last year?

Sam you guys deserve better than this. I know the future of XH558 and all you engineers is inextricably linked but when I donate (and I am about to do so now) it is you guys/gals I have foremost in mind.
