First XH558 display in the VDF
« on: June 01, 2012, 04:13:58 PM »
Hi all,

I'm looking to tie down the actual date of the first public display by the VDF when using XH558. She did the TVS Airshow in Bournemouth in May 1986... just prior to the retirement of XL426 in that role.

I need to tie down the day/date. Anyone with a programme/logbook/advert or knowledge of that day please?

It will be used for a timeline of Vulcan events on various merchandise to tie in with the 60th Anniversary.

Many thanks,
Ian

The TVS Airshow appears to have been held between the 31st May and 1st June 1986 so Id's say 558 was first flown on the 31st May.

Probably the same way as I did.......by googling "TVS Airshow 1986" !!
One of the links that throws up is to one of the aviation-photos websites , which gives the dates they were taken as 31st May and 1st June.

Incidentally......given what's written in his biog. here , have you asked Taff ?? { VDF in 1984/5 , then Red Arrows immediately after that }

I'm working flat out here, and Taff is a little busy. Just published newsletter and all points bulletin, so no time for Googling!!
I'd tried quickly earlier and got a 'cine' to YouTube link as the only clue, but no confirmed date.

Thanks for the research.... needed a quick answer.

There was an Al Dow Vulcan Pilot and the AEO was probably Ed Billings - I don't think the air crew, apart from the pilots, in those days were as regular as they became from 1987 onwards.

Thank you Denis and Pam,

That proves several books and indeed 'Google' are wrong, which was my fear. Hence, why I was asking for source and verificatioin of the info.

So folks, first XH558 display was at RAF Mildenhall - 24th May 1986.

Well in your first post you did seem to indicate that the TVS Airshow was the first display, so I just went looking for that particular shows dates.
