Structural modifications
« on: August 15, 2012, 03:47:44 PM »
Ive been pondering this for awhile now. Im sure like me most of 558 fans want her in the air for as long as possible?  Isnt it time to discuss if this modification can and will be done?  I know we have issues with engines, but this mod would keep her going for a few more years and surely is worth doing!! Im sure the amount that is needed would soon be raised.

Dee, it's already been discussed at length elsewhere - the mod isn't worth doing if there isn't enough engine life to make it worthwhile. Sam posted a while back that the mod had been investigated and is possible, but no point adding several years to the airframe life if we've only got a year or so engine life left. The only hope would be if Rolls allow the life of the remaining engines to be extended, which is also being investigated, but personally I think they'll continue to err on the side of caution.

But....if engine life was extended then I agree with Dee...I don't think the target would be unachievable  :)

Do it anyway - I just want to see what is required - I believe that the location of the mod is for both wings as shown in this diagram

I could be wrong.  :?

What's the point in spending that amount of money for no reason?

Right, assuming there's no extension to engine life wouldn't the money be better spent securing her long term future?

Yes but since it runs to eight volumes I don't think I'll be posting it on here!

The wing/spar mods is venturing into unknown territory for both the trust and engineers.

Vulcans were scrapped long before this mod was ever required/undertaken to any flying airframe in RAF service (so I am led to believe, willing to be proved wrong). It will be a costly expense if it was to be undertaken... not to mention the time it may take to undertake the job. 558 could potentially miss a complete air show season and lose out financially on public donations alone.

It would entail yet more fund raising to pay for it...  thus public interest will be lost. I would love to see 558 flying for another few years - but sadly - I accept that 2013 may be her last year gracing our skies. Enjoy her while you can  :D

I've been involved with this aircraft now since before the first lottery application and every small thing I have done since then has been to, firstly, get her back in the air and secondly to keep her there. I've spent 100's of hours stood on airfields, talking and raising funds, long before she was flying. Given, in various ways,  £1000's of my own money and will continue to do so to keep 558 where she should be, flying.  I firmly believe every effort should be made, by the trustees, the operating company, club and it's members,  to stop her being grounded.  What needs to be done ? I'm not sure. How do we convince Rolls to extend the engines ? The mod is surely achievable.  My view is, once she's grounded, we've lost her as a real aircraft, for ever. When that happens, she's just another grounded Vulcan.  As supporters, surely our sole purpose is to ensure this wonderful aircraft is kept flying for as long as possible and not give up on her.
