1974 Giant Voice Vulcan Sqdns....
« on: November 12, 2012, 11:38:07 AM »
Hello.

I ideally wanted to ask this in the Ground Crew Forum but I can't post in there.....

I have a really old photo of my Dad stood at the bottom of the cockpit ladders, and I can make out that he has a big blue Giant Voice '74 badge on his overalls, but cannot quite make out the Sqd badge on his arm. To me it looks like a red trident-esq design, but its hard to see.

He was at Waddo for a fair bit, Cyprus, Gaum, if any one could help with the badge, that would be brill!

I could ask him, but I badger him incessantly enough as it is, and he doesn't know that this pic exist still!

Thank you

Tyler

I'm certain that someone will be able to help you with this Tyler. Can you put the print on the forum and see what response you get?

I think it's  35 Sqn..... as Peter was at Cyprus and  35 Sqn was also and the badge, to my mind, looks most like below....

35 Sqdn

Coningsby
Cottesmore
Akrotiri
Scampton

1/12/62 - 6/11/64
7/11/64 - 14/1/69
15/1/69 - 15/1/75
16/1/75 - 28/2/82 B2
B2
B2
B2

=======================

.. will keep digging to be sure 8-)

I have cobbled this up to see if anyone can see it better......
It took me all the might in the world to decode the "Giant Voice 74" badge, but cannot just for life of me make out the other one.

Thanks for the help there ZeroOne anyway, much appreciated.

P.S. Any chance this can be moved by the mods to the Former Ground Crew Forum or not??

That badge kind of looks like a trident to me, but could be 617's?

Yes looks like you could be right, but I thought 617 was never based at Waddington or Cyprus.... thought Scampton was always their home? and there was no mention of Scampton in first post?

617 Sqdn Scampton 1/5/58 - 1/1/82 B1 until 7/61

This is perhaps the most well known RAF bomber squadron due to its exploits during WWII when it destroyed the hydro-electric dams used by the German war-machine. It was disbanded shortly before 1956, but reformed in May 1958 to fly Vulcan B1s from Scampton. By September 1961 it was equipped with the B2 variant which was armed with the Blue Steel missile. The squadron was disbanded in 1981, but has since reformed and now flies the Tornado.

Yep, he was deffinatlry posted at Cyprus.

Told a tale once of the Vulcan doing a little fly-about for friends and family around the air base, and that on banked turn he thought with some other crew, it was a little too low to the the horizon. Anyway upon the bird landing, it got rushed straight into a hanger to have bits a substanstial amount of coral and other such sea paraphinalia removed from the edge of the wing.....

But yes that last one looks more like it to me. I am struggling to find much info on the Giant Voice sorties really.

To be honest I thought 617 was Scampton based only as well.

You'd be correct on that one. 617 were Scampton based and never went to Akrotiri... I just had it confirmed by an ex 617 pilot.  ;)

He does know of a Gibson.. but not a Peter, as in this thread. (The plit thockens)

Maybe this will help.

You say that he served at Cyprus and Guam, was he a Ground Equipper or supplier?

The blue overalls were, if my memory serves me correctly, ex navy and issued for the detatchment.

The large circular badge was the SAC patch and the GV74 patch is a representation of the H2S radar screen markers

During the detachtment there were no individual squadron markings on the overalls, as far as I can remember. The only additional patch could have been for 1 Group but as I do not have one in my collection think not. It may be that this photo was taken later and he had the additional patch added after the detatchment.

I have looked at the Official SAC programme containing photographs of the participants and cannot see him in the ground crew photos so maybe he was attached just for the detatchment at Barksdale and did not take part in the work up at Waddington where the photos were taken.

Hello people,

Thanks for all your vested interest, I finally got around to asking him yesterday and heres what I can remember.

He was in 9 Sqn, the one with the old bat.

So it all makes sense (to me at least). The Giant Voice exercise issue is still a murky area in respect to the arm badge. He said that you had to be selected for the sortie, it wasn't just any Tom, Dick or Harry that to do it. It was an amalgamation of the best crew of the squadrons at that time, and due to him being a Sergent and qualified (to a high grade that begins in A_ _ _ _) in Engine Electrics, Airframe Engineering, and something else to do with Electrics, he was chosen because he could effectively three mangers jobs in one.

Also his thoughts were that he could be wearing the 617 Sqn badge as perhaps because that is the worlds best know bombing squadron (Lancaster Bomber) then why not go under that guise? Just a thought.

He was at Guam with some other crew that checked and serviced over the Vulcan after it landed from Singapore. The VC10 that was suppose to pick him and fellow crew up had broken down somewhere and he was stuck for 2 weeks, having the time of his life, I quote "I was single at the time".... Anyone know of a pig and mushroom sticker being stuck on a tailplane of a B-52 by these Waddington crew before it dropped a load off at Vietnam?

Anyway, thanks to everyones help, sorry if it looks like I'm being a bit of a sycophant about my own Dad but, he doesn't often talk about it, and I'm very proud of him.

Ta

As you can tell from the responses people on here enjoy these 'blasts from the past' and it always produces some very interesting discussions.

Hope it has helped to get your dad talking as it's important to preserve their memories.

617 Sqn was never based in Cyprus but we did do detachments and Rangers to Malta and Cyprus sometimes for several weeks either as a singleton or in groups.
