Nice one Sam

Pity we can't have one on the air show circuit in UK. (Would give the Typoon display mob something to think about :)))

I've been quite vociferous in my objection to this happening but after speaking to an engineer that despite being a midget knows his stuff, I have to agree with him in that the engineering set up looks right.

There is a short feature in the latest Flypast mag and some superb Lightning photos from Ian Black.  Mike B-H states that the SA CAA were with him all the way and "every component has been overhauled or replaced, including the engines and jet pipes." M B-H states that the 45 min test flight was flawless. "The aircraft is now 100% serviceable with not a single snag.
Work on the F.6s XP693 and XR773 is ongoing and one of them will fly this year."

I look forward to more A2A shots from Blackie and the full 45 mins HD video....

As for that damning report and the CAA's backing of this latest flight - read here and draw your own conclusions.   http://www.thundercity.com/pages/499409045/Home.asp

Whatever the pros and cons I offer my respect to M B-H. Talk about cojones.....

I don't place much faith in statements from Thunder City etc. There's enough stuff not in the public domain that backs up the accident report.

The Lightning had a major affect on my decision to join the RAF when I was a young teenager, seeing them taking off, ripping my stomach apart in the process, and displaying at Middleton St George was just so awe inspiring.
It would be terrific to see one flying again in the UK but I don't know what the chances would be. Does anyone think it would be possible to get one of the Bruntingthorpe lightnings airworthy?

No. Never going to happen.

Firstly the LPG have no wish to fly them. Then there's parts and engines. Very thin on the ground now, engines are near non existent.  The various bodies you'd need to provide support would run a mile and lastly, the CAA will tell you to bugger off. If there was the slightest chance then the Thunder City mob killed that.

As Heyfordian says, some interesting reading in (current) March Flypast magazine.
It also includes a bit about the restoration to flight of XS422 in the US.

Quite the opposite. The Typhoon is a fragile beast. Go near it with a toffee hammer and it'll cry like a girl

Confused as to why that's the opposite ???  Can't really comment on how tough a Typhoon is. Never had cause to hit one with a toffee hammer. I bet a Lightning wouldn't break through.

Huge amount of maintenance needed. 100 hours maintenance for every hour of flight.
