Just in case anyone is confused...

What Paul has posted here is a picture of the cross section of a main-wheel tyre.

The top of the picture is the bead which seals onto the hub - we run the tyres @ 270 psi so the carcass needs to be pretty strong and the bead needs to make a good seal which is one of the reasons the beads are so wide.

The four silver coloured circles in the bead are actually wire cables which have been cut through - try cutting a redundant bit of electrical cable for an idea on the work involved here.

The white dots are the canvass chords which run around the tyre.

As you can see this tyre still had about 1mm of rubber on the tread before it was worn to the chords - though the tyres tend to wear more in the middle now than they did in service as 558 is operating at much lower weights than she did in service.

The tyre was cross sectioned for us by Meggitt of Coventry who have taken over from Dunlop as our OEM supplier for the tyres and wheels.
I'll never give up on the dream!
