Last Hurrah?
« on: March 16, 2015, 07:07:48 PM »
Dear Vulcan-ites,
The general consensus seems to be that this will be 558's final flying year.  :-\

However, there seems to be talk of extending engine/air-frame life by treating The Old Gal a bit more gently.

So, is this REALLY her last year or might she fly again after this season?
Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick its in the club members section that's why you can't access it, why not become a member then you see everything, I have copied and pasted it for you below

Have you seen the item posted on Facebook?
https://www.facebook.com/Vulcantotheskyclub?fref=ts

I'm trying to read between the lines but not sure I really understand what he's saying. Into 2016 or not??????

Opening statement from Robert in tonight's news letter, comments welcome.
Writing an introductory letter to supporters and Club members, Trust Chief Executive Robert Pleming has this to say:
“This has been a very difficult letter to write. To come straight to the point, we are preparing for what we have for some time believed will be XH558’s final flying season. For everyone who has followed her restoration, the return to flight and seven years of spectacular displays – and especially for those who have donated generously to keep her flying – it is going to be an emotional year.
“I would like to reassure you, however, that we are doing everything we can to postpone that final landing for as long as possible.
“You may remember that the release of extra airframe life last year has allowed us to change the way that we fly XH558 to reduce the rate at which we consume engine life. Over the winter, we have been analysing the engine usage data collected during the 2014 season to understand how this has affected the amount of safe flying hours remaining. But this is only one part of a complex jigsaw: safety is always our most important criterion and there are many other factors that need equally careful consideration by ourselves and by external specialists.
“When you have finished reading this newsletter, do please read engineering director Andrew Edmondson’s explanation of the six most critical factors that affect flying life.
“At this stage, may I recommend that you plan your summer assuming that 2015 will be the last year in which you will be able to see and hear the magnificent sight of a Vulcan howling overhead? But please be reassured that we are doing everything we can to put that emotional final flight off for as long as possible and will keep you in-touch with developments.”

I hope she will fly for a while yet.

However, that day will come and a very sad day it will be.

It is inevitable that 558's flying days would (eventually) reach the end of the road at some time, due to engine life or other factors.

IF 2015 is to be her final year on the display circuit - so be it. Let's be thankful to the whole team that gave us 558 back to grace the skies again. I have supported this project from it's early days of dreams of restoration to current day.

I have fingers crossed that this won't be her swan song year. As the saying goes... 'It ain't over till the fat lady sings'.

If it is her final year...... then let's give her our utmost support from all fronts.

Aha. thanks- explains why I couldn't see it!
Best join up..

Seems to me there's an [understandable] hedging-of-bets going on at the moment..

My feeling FWIW is that it would be a real shame to nurse-maid her through this season just to have a few more 'Sunday outing' flights next year.
Full-power and barrel-rolls, then an honourable retirement seems more in keeping with The Vulcan Spirit.  >:D

EDIT: Have posted on VTTSC FB page seeing if there's any chance of clarification..
