Wot no Nimrods ?
« on: October 19, 2010, 02:19:49 PM »
So it looks like MOD are also binning the MRA4 .........well that was a waste of about £9.5billion , wasn't it !!
Obviously really well planned , as there were 2 of them up flight-testing last week !
Nothing said about whether the RAF are still getting the { even older } RC-135.
Kinloss looks to be closing.

Yes - a complete waste of money, I'm disgusted! Looks like the Nimrods role has died with it, as Kinloss is closing.

I Agree Mike & its the Politicians who take us into these messes, then the poor troops etc have to stop the water like the Titanic :x  :x

Reading the review it says they will not bring them into service so does this mean "Mothball them" it will not be a waste of money then ;)  But do not hold your breath.

We have to do something we are so far in the red.... £465m PER DAY interest rates & if we don't tighten out belts the total will an extra £100m by the end of this parliament [assuming they last 5 years] the military is £38b over spent as it is.

And I like one of the excuses for binning the MRA4 being that "we no longer have a requirement for long-range search and rescue capability"
Huh ??
You mean ships or yachts are no longer sinking or going missing outside of the UK "12 mile limit" !!
Oh , that's right.......they can use a UAV to do that instead !
What bean-counting muppit thought that one up ??

Really, the new Nimrod should never have been designed in the first place. Coming out of the cold war, did we really need it? We could have had re-conditioned Orion turboprops, or even a suitable version of an existing Airliner (A330) would surely have been cheaper.

The design (engines buried in wing roots) is hopelessly outdated, more costly to modify, and limits future engine upgrades.

BUT, when billions of pounds have been spent on something (which has gone way, way over budget) but is on the cusp of entering service, it's just too far advanced to scrap!

......I can see Russia stepping up and testing our now severely limited defence.

I think it will be a little more south than Russia that things might get tested.

OK I have a plan so cunning if it had a tail it would be a ferret!

If we take all the sensors from the MR4 and put it here:
http://www.janes.com/news/defence/air/i ... _1_n.shtml

Just remember you read it here first.
